Only one complete candidate slate filed for the Eldora city election on November 3. Community leaders urge more interest to ensure competitive votes, stressing that rival campaigns foster ideas and good government. The city clerk says filing closes today, October 6, under new state law.
Representatives of VFLW Auxiliary have volunteered to prepare mailings for the Christmas Seal sale in Eldora. Mrs May 8 Cobb Christirnes Seal Mrs M Date Rodgers will chair the group. On Nov 16 1953 the first Seals go into the county mail. Volunteers will fold seals address and stuff envelopes. AT COUNTRY CLUB Mr Neil Hudson Edina Mo and Mrs Hudson work at Pine Lake country club with her in dining room and him in charge of locker rooms.
Len Howe, noted Des Moines broadcaster and IRHA Hardware News host, will visit Bekemeier Hardware Saturday as part of a statewide tour to free peanuts and deer awards. Prizes include a Bunbeam coffee maker, a seven piece club aluminum set, two 16 piece plastic breakfast sets, and a Torino glass set. Howe joined WHO news in 1938 after graduating from the Missouri journalism school and served four years in World War II.
A special meeting of the Walter Sayer Post American Legion is scheduled for Thursday night at 7 p.m. here to finalize plans for the October 15 stay event.
Members of the Rural Young group will gather Thursday for a local meeting. The tour was attended by Roser na Chaney, a Hardin County club member, highlighting rural youth involvement.
Eldora volunteer firemen will conduct their annual fire prevention program at the Eldora school auditorium Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. The program features an essay winners, two music items, and a talk by local chef Q. O. R. Lamb. The event awards 12 cash prizes for poster contests and essays. Posters will be displayed that evening and prizes announced by local school faculty.
Rotary districts governor Otis Young will attend Eldora club weekly meeting at Pine Lake country club. This annual visit will cover committee reports and other annual business before the gathering concludes.
After a 31 hour stakeout, Carl K. Zoske age 18 of Alden and two juveniles were arrested near Alden for breaking and entering the Johnson Cafe on Thursday and stealing 13 cases of beer. They admitted to destroying five rural mailboxes and a school scene. All posted $1,000 bonds and are charged with breaking and entering.
At Holy Name of that group at St Marys Church here Thursday, plans for the new year will also be discussed. Father George Mahoney will install the new officers.
James C. Rydeen 23 of Stillwater Minnesota weds Audrey Filbrandt 20 of Alden. Donald W. Wittick 20 of Cambridge weds Barbara Wegner 20 of Radcliffe. Eugene Zielske 24 of Eldora weds Donna Wheeler 19 of Grundy Center.
Carl Neumann Radcliffe high school coach was elected president of the Pike Lake conference. The group voted to hold a basketball jamboree on Nov 14 at Union and drew pairings for the Pine Lake tournament at Owasa in January. Supt Herbert Moeller was succeeded. Bryan Starr continues as secretary.
Students at Eldora high school will view driving tests at 2 00 p m to show how false impressions and a sense of security from modern cars can lead to danger and trouble. Supt Simone says the event demonstrates correct and incorrect habits with Tom Irwin and Shirley Follett among student drivers. The program, co sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and local Farm Bureau, invites the public to attend the lecture and demonstration.
In conference play no decision was reached. The Pine Lake tourney runs January 17 to 20 at Owasa with first round games Friday night. Pairings include Reys Hubbard vs Radcliffe and Union vs Steamboat Rock among others, three games Thursday and a final Saturday night.
Judge H C Nichols presides at the district court term that began yesterday. The docket lists nine new state cases and 43 civil cases for this first general term with a jury since March. Grand jurors are ordered to report today and petit jurors on Oct 12. correction notes that Harvey Ablenhopp was misidentified.
Eldora volunteer firefighters responded to two farm fires on Friday. They went to the LaVerne Gast farm about 11:30 a.m. and to the Bob Woods farm at 4:45 p.m. A railroad ditch fire near Gast farm was quickly put out. Steamboat Rock Fire Department also assisted. Woods farm fire was in a corn field.
A list of upcoming farm events and Farm Bureau meetings across Iowa towns including Eldora Owa Concord Elma Buckeye and Clay with dates October 6 10 12 13 and 14. Activities include board meetings farm demonstrations and township annual meetings across counties and townships.
The Eldora township Farm Bureau will meet tonight at 6 30 p m with the election of officers and resolutions the principle business on the agenda. There will be a pot luck dinner. The committee is Frank Petty Ben Juckems Carl Cordes and P E Hobson.
Final rites for James L Williams 75 Eldora underway tomorrow afternoon at 2 30 pm from Andrle Creps Funeral Home. The Rev Dewey Lamprecht to conduct the service. Williams died yesterday morning at Eldora Memorial hospital after a long illness.
Don LaValle was elected president of the Eldora Kiwanis club with duties starting January 1, 1954. Jack Puckett becomes vice president, Linus Doughty treasurer, and a new board named including Rev John Moore Join Essig Jurgen Tjaden Clifford Shannon E J Matheson Dr R C Rogers and R M Hunt. The group plans a home talent show Flying High on Oct 20 and 21 staged at the high school auditorium under Donna Humble.

A Community Chest parade is planned for Saturday with WHO newscaster Len Howe leading the event. Eldora high school football team and marching band will ride convertibles from the M and St. L depot to the courthouse square, ending with a pep rally and award ceremony in the corn crib.
The Eldora Home-School Association will sponsor a Stop Look and Listen program in the high school assembly at 8 p m October 12. Parents may view books and workbook materials while teachers from kindergarten through high school explain purposes. A ten minute Q and A follows for parents.
The Hardin county 1953 corn price support rate is $1.55 per bushel. Loans and purchase agreements for the 1953 crop run through May 31, 1954 with loans maturing July 31. Corn must grade No 3 or better, or No 4 on test weight, to qualify. First loan applications expected this month. The rate equals 80 percent of parity, same as 1952.
Eldora voters face a final day to file nomination papers with City Clerk George Shafer. George E. Janssen leads a mayoral bid with others like R R Brown James L Bales Paul H Schaa Dr H E B Gray John A Wood and Howard Caffee seeking city council seats. New terms include two year posts with elections set for November 3 and odd year cycle changes stemming from state law.
Mr and Mrs Paul Wallis of Eldora report their son Cpl James L. Wallis, killed in Korea around July 20, 1950, is en route to the United States. Funeral arrangements are tentative with burial planned at Eldora Cemetery after services at the Congregational church. He was Hardin county’s first Korean War casualty, initially listed as missing in action ending with a telegram confirmation.
