Training School Building Program To Cost 320 000
The Iowa budget committee approved three new structures for the training school for boys in Des Moines, totaling about 320000 dollars. Funding will cover 160000 from the committee’s contingent fund for a shop fire loss and 160000 from the Board of Control’s funds. One building will reuse the burned shop’s foundation, another will house auto and blacksmith work, and a third will expand the school’s manual training and science spaces. Construction may begin this summer.

Pike Shipment Placed in Iowa River for Growth
A consignment of 250,000 newly hatched pike was brought from Spirit Lake hatchery and released at multiple sites in the Iowa River between Eldora and north of Steamboat Rock. Embryos are expected to reach six to ten inches as they grow, aided by clear water, shade, and vegetation. The river’s clarity is credited to widespread soil conservation by local farmers.

Eldora consolidated schools will close Thursday May 31 at 2 30 p m announced by Sept F K Schmidt. Today Friday the 43 local seniors are on a class trip to Des Moines visiting the statehouse historic building art center and a radio station. Graduates hold class day May 25 with baccalaureate May 27 and commencement May 28. Eighth grade promotion is set for 10 a m on May 25 while other grades finish May 28 29 or 30 teachers on duty May 30 and students return May 31 for final activities and report cards.

Cunningham to Talk at Monday Banquet for Hi-Y and Mothers
RAY CUNNINGHAM Y M C A secretary at Iowa State college will be guest speaker next Monday at the Hi Y Mother and Son banquet in the Congregational parish hall at 6 30 oclock. George Tagg Hi Y chaplain will be toastmaster. Cunningham a 1917 South Dakota State college graduate served in World War I and has been in Y M C A work since 1919 at Minnesota seven years and at Iowa State since 1926. He has statewide renown for speeches at 4 H club banquets youth dinners and school commencements in Iowa. He spoke at Owasa graduation Wednesday and will address four big school senior classes next week. The Ames secretary lost two sons in World War II and has two daughters one married living in New York and another a sophomore at Iowa State.

Eldora offers new residence number plates at city hall for 123 dollars. Owners must provide legal description and proof plates are legible from a distance. The Johnson residence plate is visible from the Herald Index office across the street. By Tuesday fourteen residents had bought markers.

News Writing Award to Loyal Meek of Cedar Rapids Gazette

Decorations go up on Eldora street lamps this week for a pony show and sale drawing crowds next week. Twenty four Masonite ponies, 36 by 48 inches, will hang from brackets on light posts, painted by Eastman Nuckolls with support from Eldora Mill and Manufacturing Co. workers and Central States Electric crews will erect them using last year’s brackets.

1952 Auto Licenses Arrive For County Vehicles
A shipment of 8 750 auto license plates and 2 000 truck tags for 1952 was received at the county treasurer's office on Wednesday. For next year only one car plate will be issued to be placed at the rear of the vehicle. The 1952 licenses are black with white numerals.

Decor by juniors from Saturday’s banquet remained, with light and silver streamers creating a festive setting as Rhythm Trio performed. Doyle Felton served as master of ceremonies and Wilson Hadley outlined countywide remodeling plans for the fairgrounds pavilion, noting fundraising needs. Grinnell College troupe presented vaudeville acts led by Peter Carlton, Ann Good, Sylvia Redding, and Peter McAleenan with song, impersonation, comedy, and pantomime entertaining the audience.

Skillful pianist charms luncheon with playful tricks
An unusually adept pianist performed with one hand on Yankee Doodle and the other on Dixie, then used a grape fruit in place of a prop. Guests filed into the hall, ate a luncheon in two lines, and socialized in the gymnasium or school yard. The meal featured meat, bread, chips, pickles, ice cream, cookies, coffee and pop.
