Local Winners Shine At Kiwanis Benefit Horse Show

Three area exhibitors claimed firsts as about 800 people attended the Kiwanis club benefit horse show at the fairgrounds on July 4. Winners included Little Hed Russell in ponies under 44 inches, Winnie Ray in walking horse, and Cap. Jesse Wright in stock horse, with numerous other ribbon awards for local riders and ponies across divisions.

Permits to Build Issued to Three

Eldora city council issued three building permits and a cigarette license at its regular meeting. T. B. Monteith gets a 48 by 26 residence and garage on the south side, a 32 by 20 home in Kramer’s River View Drive addition is approved for George R. Staufiacher, and Mrs. C. Clarke may add a 14 by 23 two bedroom addition on west Edgington avenue. A cigarette license was issued to Louis Darzes.

347 Youngsters Enjoy Red Cross Swimming School

Representing seven communities a total of 347 children are enrolled in the South Hardin County Red Cross swimming school at Pine Lake beach. Lay Smith, director, notes the second week of instruction as it closes. Enrollees include 150 boys and girls from Hidora with classes Tue Thu Sat mornings, others from Radcliffe Steamboat Rock Whitten New Providence Hubbard Union joining Mon Wed Fri mornings. Students are bused to sessions and assisted by three Eldora youths Janet Schmidt Mrs Mayo Wille and Kenneth Norman, trained Red Cross lifeguards.

Rotary Honors E H Lundy on 80th Birthday

Edward EH Lundy, practicing attorney in Eldora for 56 years, was honored by Botarians at their Tuesday noon meeting for his 80th birthday. After H J Janssen, sergeant-at-arms, announced the occasion, members applauded and sang Happy Birthday. Janssen allowed him to set his birthday fine to be paid next week.

New Providence Hardware to Host Free Demonstration

New Providence Hardware will host a free Wash Day demonstration on Wednesday June 11. Mr and Mrs Cletus Ruxlow will return to show modern washing and drying equipment from 2 30 to pm and 7 to pm. The event was announced on page five.

County School Board Adopts $10,000 Budget for 1952

The county board of education approved a $10,000 budget estimate for 1952 and set a public hearing for Monday at 2 p m in the courthouse. Superintendent Albers noted proposed expenditures are $500 less than the current $10,800. Previous years show $11,000 in 1950 and $9,545 in 1949. A detailed breakdown appears elsewhere in the paper.

Training School Hosts Holiday Independence Program

The training school enjoyed a full day of events for Independence Day arranged by recreation director David J. George. Activities included two ball games a track meet wrestling boxing a picnic supper and an evening movie for attendees.

Bus Service Here Hinges on Result Monday Hearing

Arrow Coach Lines of Ottumwa seeks Iowa Commerce Commission approval to run daily bus service between Grinnell and Cedar Falls via Eldora with schedules looping through Marshalltown Waterloo and Ottumwa. Hearing opens 9:30 a.m. Monday in Marshalltown. Eldora and other communities expect representation. If approved operations could begin within about ten days after the decision.

Red Cross Elects Officers Tonight at Ping Lake

South Hardin Red Cross chapter will hold its annual meeting Friday evening at Ping Lake cafe. A 6 30 dinner precedes the business session. reports from the past year will be presented and all officers elected. Present officers include Leo G. Wildlife Club Caravan Advertises July Dedication

A caravan planned by Pine Lake Wildlife club officers will start in Eldora at 10 30 am Thursday July 12 to publicize the July 15 dedication of Hudson Memorial park. The event features a German band directed by Milo Myers, recruiting young ladies to sell lapel buttons for funding, and a Chamber of Commerce convoy promoting the celebration. The route includes Union Hubbard Radcliffe Alden Town Falls Ackley and Steamboat Rock before returning to Eldora.

Orange Crate Derby Attracts Eldora Youths

Eldora youths under sixteen show strong interest in the orange crate derby set for August 17 during Kiddies days. Many request the rules and build tips, with cars already under construction. Sponsorship is by the Chamber of Commerce, chaired by George O Brya, with Claude Sraith Freeman Johnson John B Wood Jack Piper Dick Protheroe and Dick Loverin on the committee.

Conference to Set Assessor's Budget

A county conference board meeting will decide the assessor's budget next Tuesday at 10 30 a m in the courthouse. The panel includes the supervisors the county board of education and city mayors. Group Celebrates by Improving Property

A group of Wildlife club members spent July 4 improving the clubhouse and grounds. Some men built a fireplace, others erected a fence, cut brush, and cleaned up the area around the building.

Local Pilots Fly In C. R. Air Lift

Six south Hardin county pilots joined 14 others in a civil defense airlift from Emmert airport south of Iowa Falls to Cedar Rapids on Sunday afternoon. The exercise moved 110000 pounds of simulated supplies to Cedar Rapids, using 309 planes from 82 airports. Pilots included Pale Johnson, Troy Jones, Kay Setchell of Eldora, Warren Reese of New Providence, and John L. Buller and Bill Winther of Eldora, with craft owned by Les Emmert.

Guests of Hink at Fox rink near Eldora

News in brief notes guests of Hink from Quakerdale will visit the Fox skating rink at the fairgrounds next Tuesday evening. Extension Director Dick Pulge and his family left last Saturday for a two week vacation at a Minnesota lake. Police report 19 traffic violation arrests in Eldora during June.

City Proposes $144,800 Budget for Next Year

City council hearings on the budget estimate set for Monday July 28 at 7:40 p.m. The proposed expenditures total 144,800 for the fiscal year beginning April 1, 1852. The adopted budget rises 5,216 over the prior year’s 126,584 estimate, with water and other services shown as detailed in the royal notice published elsewhere in this paper.

Minnesota Man Named Principal of Eldora High

Donald Turkington 28, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, was elected principal of Eldora High, succeeding W. Earl Harmon who resigned for Cresco. Turkington holds a B.S. from St Marys College Winona and an M.A. from Minnesota, with prior teaching and navy service including radar work. he and his wife have a four year old daughter.

Eldora Entrants Win At Horse Shows

Entrants from Eldora earned honors in two Iowa horse shows this week. At Waverly Greg Heis inger rode Scout to first in ponies under western equipment while Gordon Reisinger and Lit tle Red Russell topped the English equipment pony division and Gordon also finished fourth in horsemanship. At Hedrick Ed Bear's Flash won first in open pony and Dwight Heltibridle placed fourth in walking horse with Winnie Ray.

Former Iowa Woman Built 6000 Acre African Ranch

Elizabeth Feint Mackenzie, a former Iowa farm girl now in her seventies, operated a 6000 acre ranch in South Africa since 1923 near Bloemfontein. She explains wildlife, drought fears, and water challenges, recalls immigrating with her Scotch husband, and notes horses as her main passion and sheep as a smaller venture. She plans to return to Eldora in October to visit family before resuming life in Africa.

Des Moines Man Is High Bidder On $75,000 Issue

Des Moines bidder Becher and Co. won the $75,000 Eldora sewer construction bonds with a premium around $330 after 12 bidding rounds. City officials set 2 percent interest, issued 75 bonds of $1,000 each, and prepared a tax levy to cover annual debt service. Several firms from Eldora Des Moines Cedar Rapids competed. Victor Becker of Becker and Caywine paid the bonds’ principal and premium plus accrued interest.
