Eldora Police Report Break-Ins and Vandalism Tuesday

Eldora Police reported two break-ins and car vandalism Tuesday night. Erv's Gulf Station was broken into and 40 cartons of cigarettes taken after pryed back window. Sno Creme Drive In window broken but nothing missing. Terry Monroe’s car in Walde's Feed & Supply lot had about 140 damage from a smashed windshield around midnight.

Soprano Linda Wood to sing at Barga Opera Festival

Linda Wood, soprano, selected to perform with the Barga Opera Festival in Barga, Italy, this summer. The program runs four Italian operas over six weeks starting July 3. A 1967 Eldora High School graduate, she earned a BA in music from Northwestern in 1971 and studied voice in New York City with Ellen Faull. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Wood.

Ten Students Registered for Steamboat Rock Kindergarten

Ten students registered for the Steamboat Rock Community School kindergarten class for next year. Names include Lori Ann Blosch, Jerry Fisher, Kevin Frerichs, Calvin Heard, Arlan Jaspers, Tony Newell, Lora Pieters, Melissa Rotgers, Bradley Shaw, and Rhonda Sheriff. Mrs Carrie Cakerice will join as kindergarten and first grade instructor at Steamboat Rock School next year.

A Social Security Administration representative will meet residents in Eldora at the county office building on Monday May 8 and Monday May 22 from 9 to 11 a.m., per district manager Vernon S. Meyer.

Graduates Planned Across Region This May

About 201 seniors from Eldora and five area schools will graduate in May. Eldora leads with 68 seniors. nearby Radcliffe, Steamboat Rock, New Providence, Hubbard, and Union-Whitten also hold ceremonies. Baccalaureate services run May 14 to May 21, with commencement for each school from May 9 to May 26. speakers include university and church leaders such as Dr. James G. Martin, Rev. Richard Eis, Rev. Daylight Savings Time Begins Sunday in Eldora Iowa

Daylight savings time starts Sunday April 30 at 2 a.m. in Eldora Iowa. Residents should set clocks one hour ahead Saturday night before bed using the saying spring forward fall back. The lost hour will be regained on the last Sunday in October when daylight time ends.

Pre-School Clinic Scheduled for May 1 and 2

A pre-school clinic for the 1972-73 kindergarten class at New Providence Community School is set for Monday May 1 and Tuesday May 2. No regular kindergarten classes will be held that day, and the clinic will be supervised by Hardin County Supervisemen of Schools personnel from Elora. Alan Dole Wins 7000 Hy Vee Scholarship

Eldora High School senior Alan Dole son of Glen and Mrs Dole of Eldora was named one of 10 Iowa seniors to receive Hy Vee Food Stores Chariton scholarships. His brother Steve won in 1970 and Alan attends ISU Ames. The award provides 500 yearly for four years totaling 2000 and requires Hy Vee employment or family employment. Eligibility relies on test scores grades guidance counselor recommendations activities and citizenship. The program has now awarded 40 scholarships in four years.

Eldora Library Plans Summer Reading Program Set 2 Story Hours

Eldora Public Library finalizes plans for a summer reading program with two story hours led by Judith Stiles. The younger group for four and five year olds has met since February, while a six to seven year old session is planned. The theme is Happy Raindrops and the program runs June through August for ages eight to eighteen, with May Saturday hours paused to prepare. The April 29 story hour will be the last until June, and dates will be announced soon.

Fatality Following I F Collision Near Iowa Falls

One man died and nine injured after a high speed chase ended in a collision between a car and a school bus near Iowa Falls. Victim John Smelter, 19, of Waterloo, died after transfer to Ellsworth Hospital. Injured include Michael McGrath and Delbert Hartle, taken to Mercy Hospital Des Moines in serious condition with head injuries. Also injured were Irv Egeland the driver, and four track squad members, Kirk Neubauer, Marty Craig, Tim Tjarks, plus three others released after treatment. Police report the 1970 Plymouth Duster, driven by McGrath, sped 90 mph before veering into the bus van.

Des Moines crash described by scattered eyewitnesses

An out of control car slid 68 feet after impact near the Feed & Supply driveway. Officer Thompson’s cruiser also skidded off the road, leaving passengers thrown clear as the pursued vehicle crashed about 400 feet away. A Des Moines motorist reported seeing the collision.
