Official Buttons Now On Sale For Centennial Event

Buttons of silver dollar size go on sale in several era stores after an initial P&F distribution. The Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs insignia promote wearers to gain admission discounts at the Whisker Club gathering. E J Matheson leads the sales effort and notes over 400 buttons sold, supporting a pageant, barbecue and dance.

Whisker Club Stag Fills Legion Club Rooms to Capacity

One hundred seventy five men gathered Monday evening for the initial Kidora Whisker Club meeting at the Legion club rooms. Gene Foster presided and judged a kangaroo court fining members for mustaches while a steering committee and officers were named. Members vow not to shave until the centennial celebration June 25 26 and 27 with future meetings planned and rules outlining fines for violations.

Tickets On Sale For Dist Legion Meeting April 23

Plans are under way for the Third District American Legion Spring Conference to be held here Thursday April 23. Auxiliary and Legion members will hold an evening banquet at the high school gymnasium with dancing to follow at the Legion Hall. Joe Doakes and his orchestra will provide music. Banquet and dance tickets are 2.50 per person and reservations should be mailed to C. A. VanPatter in Eldora.

Home School To Name Nominating Comm Monday

Election of a nominating committee will be the main business at the Home School Association meeting next Monday evening. New officers for next year will be elected at the May meeting. A reviewing sheet on affiliating with the national PTA and the student council panel discussion will be presented.

Capture Of Two Selves Three Thefts In County

Two Des Moines men Jess Liston and Larry Bierma are in county jail on $2,000 bonds each confessing to three county robberies and suspected in at least three more. Captured after a grocery store break in New Providence, they also admit to a Lawn Hill Lumber Company robbery and a March 4 hardware store break in New Providence. Radios and other items were recovered in a Des Moines room linked to one of the youths. Sheriff Hodgson followed tips from Neil Willia and Robert Cowell helped cover the initial theft. Cash taken from the Lumber Company and hardware store was discarded when approached. Authorities link the pair to earlier thefts at Lawn Hill and a Quakerdale incident last year.

Death of Rev. El. L. Chamness at New Providence

Word has been received of the death of Rev. El. L. Chamness 355 New Providence who passed away after a lengthy illness about 2 40 Thursday morning. Services will be held at 2 00 o clock Saturday afternoon at the Liscomb Church.

Cash Nites to Start Saturday Awards in Eldora

Cash Nites will start tomorrow in Eldora replacing the Wednesday afternoon Cash Awards. Fire siren at 3 PM Saturday will announce weekly events as cash prizes are offered to shoppers. Tomorrow's top prize is 125 dollars with six prizes of 16 dollars. New red Cash Nite streamers appear on business doors. registration is required and former Wednesday signups stay eligible. The shift to Saturday nights aims to suit farm residents beginning their busy season.

City leaders announce City Wide Clean Up Week starting Monday March 13 inviting commercial organizations civic clubs churches schools youth groups and businesses to join in community beautification. Eldora camping site and First Congregational Church Sunday School will host shrubbery work with Paul Mill guiding activities as part of a civic improvement effort. Scouts will assist during the 19 to 25 period following a recent governor proclamation.

The Hardin County Tuberculosis and Health Association holds its annual meeting this evening at Blanche and Ethel's Tea Room Eldora. Dinner at 6:30 precedes the business session. Guest speaker is Miss Vera Ewing, seal sale consultant of the Iowa Tuberculosis and Health Association, who will also show a film titled Round Trip about rheumatic fever.

Hardin County residents are asked to contribute to a cancer drive aiming to raise 4351 dollars. The effort is presented as a countywide appeal with local organizers coordinating door to door and community events to collect the funds.

Melrose No 4 Joins Eldora District In School Merger

Eldora consolidation gains Melrose No 4 as voters approve merger 131 to 4 in Eldora and 23 to 16 in Melrose. The new area adds five sections and about 270 thousand dollars in property value. Objections must file by Saturday with county superintendent M Z Albers. Petitions to merge Steamboat Rock districts were filed with 269 signatures. A meeting was set for Thursday to discuss Pleasant rural district division between Eldora and New Providence.

Potgeters to Tour Europe for Rotary Convention

Mr and Mrs George Potgeter of Steamboat Rock depart for New York to sail for Europe on April 15. They will attend the Rotary International Convention where Potgeter will represent the Eldora club and later tour England and the European continent. They expect to be away about seven weeks.

Leo Nott Elected County Board Of Education Chairman

Leo L. Nott of Alden was elected chairman of the county board of education at the reorganization meeting, replacing Ben Jaspers of Steamboat Rock who had served since 1943. Dick Arends of Etna Township joined as Area No 1 member after defeating Jaspers in March. Other members include Jerome Beach Eldora Area 4 William Hoffman Radcliffe Area 3 and Ben Topp Hubbard as member at large. Harold Cable of Pleasant No 5 rural district urged a meeting to discuss dividing the Eldora New Providence rural district, with a session set for Thursday with the district boards.

Rotarians Sell Buttons For Members Children At Meeting

Rotarians received two Centennial buttons each at the Tuesday noon meeting. Sergeant-at-arms Henry Janssen declared a dividend and said the treasury would cover 90 cents per person. Members were urged to buy buttons for their children, generating 162 button sales at this single gathering.

Simons Named Superintendent of Eldora Schools

Paul J. Simons of Stuart New School Head Paul J. Simons of Stuart, Iowa, was signed as superintendent of Eldora schools at a special meeting Tuesday. He will succeed F. K. Schmidt who resigned after 20 years. Simons, to move July 1, has been Stuart superintendent since 1942 and earlier led Peterson and Ravinia districts. He holds a BA from Yankton College and an MS from the State University of Iowa, with grad work at Michigan and Colorado. He has been active in church and civic affairs, led Masonic Lodge, Service Club, and library board, and now presides over the Southwest Iowa Speech Association. He is married with one son, Stephen, 12, and three daughters, Harriett 17, Sheridan Marie 13, Sylvia.
