Legume Pasture For Pigs Can Save Money

Iowa swine producers can cut commercial protein costs by raising spring pigs on legume pastures says E L Quaife extension animal husbandman at Iowa State College. Legume pastures like alfalfa red clover Jadine and rape offer minerals high quality protein and vitamins and an acre can carry 15 to 18 pigs on limited rations or 20 to 30 head full feed. Quaife estimates pasture could replace 75 to 100 dollars worth of other feeds per acre though he warns full year to 240 pound weights may be impractical on corn states farms.
