Eldora county extension agents report Kiwanis dinner notes Iowa farm prosperity with 350000 acres of land and 2170 farms valued at 75 000 600 dollars. Beans and small grain dominate income as speaker urges urban rural cooperation to promote welfare. Don LaVelle invited to Des Moines conference with Governor Beardsley on April 13 and 14. Wesley Bartlett and Towa Nehler named as attending Iowa representatives.

Forty-five Midtown Hereford breeders list 126 head including 30 bulls and 36 for show and female classes. Sale begins at 12 noon with bulls mostly two year olds and long year lines. Dicki Pulse says an old fashioned lease need not block spring improvements such as water systems and grassed waterways. A lease supplement lets tenants share costs and secure investment value, with Iowa State economist noting many rented farms lag in conservation work and repairs, reducing production and income.

Iowa swine producers can cut commercial protein costs by raising spring pigs on legume pastures says E L Quaife extension animal husbandman at Iowa State College. Legume pastures like alfalfa red clover Jadine and rape offer minerals high quality protein and vitamins and an acre can carry 15 to 18 pigs on limited rations or 20 to 30 head full feed. Quaife estimates pasture could replace 75 to 100 dollars worth of other feeds per acre though he warns full year to 240 pound weights may be impractical on corn states farms.
