Community churches prepare sunrise Easter observances with special music and sermons. The United Youth Fellowship will present In an Easter Garden at 7:00 a.m. in Congregational Church sanctuary, followed by breakfast reservations with Rev. Imes or Rev. Moore. Choir members and scripture readers listed for multiple services.
About twenty foreign students from Iowa State Teachers College arrive in Eldora to spend Easter weekend as Rotary Club guests. Local buses will transport them from Cedar Falls to host homes, with tours of the state training school, a Saturday evening program at the high school, and church services on Sunday. Families hosting include the Meaders, Zimmermanns, Griffels, Janssens, Crosleys, Piper, Browns, Bames, Flicks, Batesons, Cleve lands, and Bekemeiers.
Wayne Perkins of Eldora won high ranking in the national Ames In-Cross Parent Stock Flockowners best records contest. Wayne Rodgers, sales manager, announced this week.
Miss Artie Van Zee Miss Coleen Reneau and Miss Thelma Grandin of Fella visited in dorn Saturday and Sunday with Mrs. Mac Green and Miss Helen Steege.
E. Howard Hill, president of the Town Farm Bureau federation, will keynote a Buckeye township Farm Bureau meeting at the community hall next Wednesday evening, April 8. He has served in Iowa and national ag committees and on various boards, including the 4 H foundation and Des Moines Chamber agricultural panel, and has traveled extensively for agricultural study in Europe and South America.
Mrs. Andrew Stevenson age 69 died Monday in a Los Angeles hospital after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage December 4. Born Genevieve Hardin August 8 1889, she married in 1905 after Grinnell College. Survived by three sons Andrew James John, daughter Stewart Everson, two brothers J F Hardin and Hal C Hardin, seven grandchildren.
The cash awards schedule shifts to Saturday nights at 8:00 starting April 11. A top prize of 125 dollars will run alongside six 10 dollar awards on April 11. No awards are planned for next Wednesday afternoon. Eldora retailers approved the change to accommodate farm families, with the Chamber of Commerce noting the move will continue for several weeks. Wednesday afternoon winners include Mrs. Ray McAllister at Piper's Newsstand and Mrs. Clara Raske at Harrison's.
In Hardin County the old Cottage schoolhouse Ellis No. 8 near Buckeye Owa Eldora Town Falls has been transformed into a community gathering space after a March 17 school board vote. Proceeds from auctions on March 17 and 27 covered a used gas stove and 48 chairs, with a small user fee to cover utilities. The building will host Cemetery Society events and polling township meetings, uniting neighbors from four telephone exchanges and several churches.
Eldora High School hosts its annual Career Day on April 8 with about 490 students from Whitton Owasa Union New Providence Radcliffe Hubbard Alden and Steamboat Rock expected. Activities include sessions with 15 colleges and armed forces reps, keynotes by Dr Ray Bryan and Roland Ross, and panels on teaching agriculture accounting architecture journalism law medicine and more.
Eldora postoffice is slated to become first class on July 1, 1954 per postmaster W.R. Bahne. 1953 postal receipts are expected at $42,000, $2,000 over the first class threshold, with 1952 figures surpassed by a $500 gain in the first quarter of this year.
Installations of lighting equipment at the county fairgrounds race track are set to start Monday. Fair board secretary Wilson Hadley reported that both lights and poles will be installed and, with good weather, the project should be finished as soon as possible.
A townwide appeal urges men to attend Monday’s Whisker Club meeting at the Legion club rooms starting 7:80. An election of officers and the creation of an organization are planned. Members may face fines for shaves and rule violations as kangaroo courts ensure enforcement.
A junior high school event in the home economics room featured a dozen children modeling garments made by their mothers in the children's clothing class. The show presented spring suits coats trousers shirts party dresses and easy care everyday wear with a bunny finale. Mary Butler narrated as freshman homemaking students provided refreshments games stories and toys.
Nine year old Marianna Rains of New Providence won last week's Happy Tune Time contest on Station WOY Ames. Her scrapbook on current events impressed the judges. She receives the Landmark series book Franklin of Old Philadelphia by Margaret Cousins, presented by Danidy Andy Don Anderson.
Two petitions filed in Grundy County district court challenge the December 11 1952 consolidation of the Wellsburg district alleging irregularity and illegality in the preliminary steps and election. The suits seek a writ of certiorari against Grundy County officials and board members to void the consolidation and bar the newly elected board from duties.
Children present an Easter program at Lawn Hill Church Sunday morning starting at 11:00. In the evening four groups from Liberty Friends' Church perform an Easter cantata at Lawn Hill beginning at 7:30.
Native-born and international stars join centennial free acts lineup in June. Master of ceremonies Jimmie Murphy will lead the three day celebration with Betty Hill dancer and the Balabana Duo Henry ane and Anna May. Roller skating duo Bob and Miane will perform on a seven foot table. A bathing beauty contest and other features complete the free program.
A special election will be held next Monday in Eldora and Melrose No. 4 to decide merging the districts. Polls open at the courthouse in Eldora from noon to 7:00 pm and at E. V. Reece residence in Melrose No. 4 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Approval requires a majority in both districts.
The county canvass confirms Dick Arends and Ben Topp as winners in Area One and member-at-large posts with 608 and 453 votes respectively. The board will reconvene next Monday for certification of election and to appoint a new chairman for the coming year.
Charles L. Owen of Northfield Minnesota, a 27 year former Odd Fellows member, spoke at the local lodge. He discussed Odd Fellowship and his 24 years managing the I O C F home in Minnesota, now running a Northfield gift show. Refreshments followed. next Monday he plans to address candidates and all members of the der en team.
Eldora businesses close from noon to nine for unified Good Friday services. County courthouse offices shut. union service at First Methodist Church with seven ministers. St Pauls Lutheran holds special service led by Rev Zimmermann at 1 00. Holy Hour at Rt Morve Catholic Church from 2:00 to 3:00 led by Rev Fr Mahoney.
