Alumni Director Donald R. Steiner oversees a student committee shaping Hanover College homecoming with the theme The Good Old Days. He aims to rekindle ties by inviting alumni to return, see campus progress, meet students and faculty, and visit houses and professors they knew. Planning for next year begins after this one ends.
Raye Ann crowned Homecoming Queen after halftime ceremonies at the Madison football game versus Maryville. Nine former queens honored, decorations judged by Mrs. Michael Neal and others. Dance to finish the night in Long Gymnasium with The Sultans, Forever Fall theme, comedy intermission by Bud Gill, and a large alumni gathering with coaching staff.
Hanover Players rehearse Sean O Caseys Juno and the Paycock using Irish brogue and songs to aid audience understanding. Director Dr Joseph Withey notes students adjusted from exaggerated speech to a subtler Irish accent while songs and an Irish jig ease pronunciation challenges.
Students planning a five week off campus term except student teaching must pay the course deposit to the business office by November 1. Contact the course instructor to confirm the deposit amount.
Dr. Evan W. Thomas of the Chicago Board of Health will lead Monday's assembly program titled The Eradication of Syphilis Goals of the Public Health Service. Former Bellevue Hospital director, Thomas helped evaluate penicillin for syphilis beginning in 1943 and contributed to federal venereal disease work through NRCS and the Public Health Service. He taught at NYU Medical School from 1936 to 1955, then directed New York State venereal disease work until 1959, lectured nationwide, and traveled for WHO in 1949. He authored numerous syphilis articles and a book on its cause and management.
On October 16, Janet Cavins proposed forming a Hanover College Civil Rights Committee under the Student Senate after a subcommittee report. The panel urged using existing student government channels, with a faculty committee aiding communication with the college trustees civil rights group.
John Thompson of Beta Theta Pi from Louisville Kentucky a junior political science major with business minor and two years varsity baseball. Robie Vestal Phi Gamma Delta senior from Winter Park Florida biology major chemistry minor vice president of Student Senate and president of Science Club. Chuck Scott Lambda Chi Alpha sophomore from Columbus former varsity basketball broad jumper and pledge class vice president. Jim Nelson Phi Delta Theta junior from Greensburg math and political science major three years on Student Senate former Orientation Chairman. John McDowell Sigma Chi junior from Binghamton New York political science major English minor two years varsity basketball.
David Larson a senior from Indianapolis was appointed Editor of the Triangle for the remainder of the school year. A former freshman columnist and sophomore News Editor, he has earned two Indiana College Press Association awards, is an English major, history minor, and plans graduate study in American Civilization. He spent three months in Europe last spring on independent study and has held campus roles in Recreation Committee Public Affairs Forum Hillthoughts Board Alpha Phi Gamma and Young Republicans. He is a member of Beta Theta Pi and previously edited the chapter magazine and led its delegation to the 1962 National Convention.
