Alabama silences student editor of year over racial writing
Mel Meyer, named student editor of the year by USSPA, is barred by the University of Alabama from writing or commenting on any racial matters. He signed a noncomment pledge under duress and plans appeals, asking the new Committee on Freedom and Responsibility of the Student Press to review the case. The policy applies to campus correspondents, with university officials noting that the Crimson and White will still cover stories and commentary. Meyer contends the ban targets all racial topics and violates free expression.
