Essays Close With Ten Contestants

Last Saturday night ended the submission period for two campus essay contests. The Sehlbrede prize for all students concerns Triumphs of Foreign Missions since 1800, while the Evans prize for juniors and seniors seeks The American Currency Bill and Its Problems. Finalists include Mary Hawk Ira Allison Ray Hufford Albert Lesche Merrill Montgomery Gale Hufford Allen Ramsey Albert Sellers Lee Hart and others. winners will be announced commencement day.

Hart Wins Hanover Singles Selection for Crawfordsville

Lee Hart defeated Kenneth Montgomery in three sets on the Phi Gam court last Monday to earn Hanover's singles representation for the state tennis tournament in Crawfordsville. Montgomery and Hart will be Hanover's entrants, with admission charged to defray team expenses. Last year Hanover finished second to Purdue, as Hart and Blackburn represented the school. Cullen Barnes spent the weekend at his Seymour home.

Bibliophile finds in James Gray collection at McLean Library

A note lists rare items from James Gray’s library now part of the McLean Library. Highlights include Luther’s German Bible, Homer's Iliad (1805 dating), Schmidt Concordant, a 1753 Bacon volume, and Plutarch Latin edition with ownership hints.

Fishermen's Club Establishes Lake Geneva Fund

At a recent Fishermen's Club meeting the group voted to create a permanent fund to send a delegate to the Lake Geneva Wisconsin student conference. The fund acts as a loan to a student active in religious work, repayable within a year after graduation. A delegate for this year will be chosen soon with the YMCA also planning multiple delegates.

History and Pedagogy of Mathematics Reports Begin

In Mathematics nine a series of investigations was started. Miss Helen Webb spoke on The history and transcendance of Pi. Miss Mary Hawk presented The fundamental propositions of algebra. A H Watts discussed Construction with ruler and compass. Further topics include Non-Euclidean geometry Nina Peak algebraic equations Lee Hart and The theory of numbers Vivia Gaddy. The efforts show notable original work and high quality.

Hanover Church Observes Founding of First Foreign Missionary Society

Services at the Presbyterian church were led by Rev. J. B. Garritt D D 83 in memory of Hanover's founding of the first Women s Foreign Missionary Society. Miss Lilia Garritt presented the society s history and Dr Garritt shared stories from his China travels and the growth of Christian missions abroad.

Sophomore Lead in Class Tennis Tournament

The inter class tennis series shows the Sophomores leading by win percentage. Seniors and Juniors split results last Tuesday with Kehoe and Swann beating Montgomery and Hearn six four and Hamilton and Miss Hawk defeating Nagel and Miss Webb six four. Wednesday’s contests split one game each with Kehoe and Swann six four over Johnson and Trotter and James with Miss Britain six one over Nagel and Miss Williams. Juniors beat Freshmen in the men’s set while Freshmen won the mixed set.

Inter-Class Baseball Series Reinstated Schedule

The class baseball managers met after chapel to continue the inter class series suspended last week. The remainder runs through Tuesday May 29 with games starting Tuesday May 19. Schedule includes Sophomores-Seniors Juniors-Freshmen on May 19 and Freshmen-Seniors May 20, plus Juniors-Sophomores May 20. Further May dates cover Sophomores-Freshmen and Juniors-Seniors May 21 and Juniors-Freshmen and Sophomores-Seniors May 25. Final Juniors-Sophomores May 26.

Tuesday's Baseball Summary From Freshmen Sophomores

Yesterday afternoon the baseball series resumed with two games. The Senior Sophomore contest was tight and well played, finishing 3-2 in favor of the fourth year men. The Freshmen Junior game stayed close until the fifth inning when the three year men rallied to win 10-8, though falling short by two runs.
