The Academic Study Committee led by Kent Wright advances plans to form discussion groups. Groups will mix juniors and seniors or freshmen and sophomores to gauge student opinion on vital issues with emphasis on the 14-14-5 plan. Meetings will be held in faculty homes after the Brazil Institute.
Hanover College announces the Threepenny Opera cast led by Tom VanValey as Macheath and Nancy Hatchcraft as Polly in the Brecht musical. John Fettig and Jean Kinley play J J Peachum and his wife in the Sono district London setting, with Henry Bishop as Tiger Brown and Ken Bierman as Rev Kimball. Cast members include Jim Yeiser Kent Wright Dave Martin Ken Keene and several actresses portraying Jenny Lucy Betty Dolly Coaxer and Molly. Performances are May 8 and May 9 for Family Day entertainment.
A British style debate on U S foreign aid policy sponsored by the Forensic Union launches the Politics ’64 series at Hanover College in Long Ballroom. Ted Hill and Robert Hamilton argue US policy is deplorable, while Ted Lester and Kenneth Schild defend aid programs. Audience votes and brief remarks precede a March 21 conclave at Wabash College.
The May mock conventions led by Ben Weaver outline an afternoon and evening schedule with a motorcade through Hanover and Madison. Young Democrats invite Lyndon B. Johnson and other figures for a guest dinner, while committees form to structure finance platform and research potential nominees. Delegates chosen by student preference, with Tom Calloway and Dave Railsback coordinating participation.
A Thursday kick off assembly on Brazil and the Cold War will feature a panel of dignitaries. Speakers include Dora Alincar de Vasconcelos consul general of Brazil Stanley Grand deputy director AID Alberto Machado da Rosa director Luso Brazilian Center UW Cassiano Nunes NYU. Julie Irwin and Ed Barry named co chairmen for the 1964 Bike Race. Irwin, a Portsmouth Ohio junior sociology major, belongs to Rec Committee SNEA WRA Young Republicans and Phi Mu.Barry, a Lincoln Illinois junior business major, is Alpha Phi Omega member and REVONAH photographer. The race set for May 25 with potential prizes for best yell group and best costume.
Plans for Greek Week March 15 to 19 are under way with a Sunday coffee social at fraternity houses and an all-campus social service project. Discussion groups at sorority houses center on Panhellenic Interfraternity relations Scholarship Intellectual Curiosity and Social Life. An all-Greek exchange dinner and dessert in Long Gym ends with entertainment and guest speaker.
The chapel speaker this Monday is Dr Paul Louis Lehmann Auburn Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary He has written articles and books including Ethics in a Christian Context 1963 He earned his B D and Th D at Union Theological Seminary and has taught at Princeton and Harvard.
A February 25 meeting in Classic 102 featured Dean Glenn L Bonsett outlining Hanover College rules from the College Catalogue. He stressed prohibition on alcohol for all students during four years and warned that infractions could jeopardize a student’s standing. The session also covered unauthorized swimming and other policy issues.
