Hanover preserves Christmas customs from campus caroling to Candlelight services with roots going back to the 1930s. Greeks support seasons by hospital carols, charity events, and house decorations, while seniors discuss world Christmas practices in an upcoming assembly.
Alpha Phi Omega pledges 25 men with Rick Rasmussen as president and Jona Thompson as vice president in charge of projects. New pledges include Glen Bengson and Jonathan Bliss. Kappa Iota chapter in Hanover sponsored the fall blood bank and Christmas tree sale to fund the Ugly Man dance and aid Salvation Army food and clothing drives.
Freshmen return early from Christmas break for sorority and fraternity rush. Women begin January 4, men January 5 with panels led by Dean Laura Norris and Panhellenic counselors. Rush counselors will live in dorms, stay non contact, and guide freshmen through open houses, living room, Bermuda and after dinner parties, and bid night. Silence periods run until bids arrive. IFC signups and smoker events follow, with rush concluding Saturday evening and bids by mail.
Three fraternities Beta Theta Pi Lambda Chi and Sigma Chi report cash thefts totaling about 400 from wallets while members slept between four and six o clock Saturday morning. Dean Glen Bonsett says police are pursuing leads and urges students to obtain personal property insurance and keep valuables locked up amid holiday thefts in Hanover area.
Hanover College Choir presents its annual Christmas concert at Hanover Presbyterian Church with two services at 4 30 and 8 00 to accommodate attendance. The hour long program includes familiar carols such as Holst s Christmas Song and other pieces arranged for this service. Students and community members are invited to attend for a memorable candlelit procession and traditional carols.
Dr. Ernest Gordon of Princeton spoke on social codes of conduct and Christian ethics. He argued obedience stems from love of neighbors and that sacrifice for loved ones may even lead to death. He noted people fear love and seek security in law. Gordon has been at Princeton nine years and served in a Highland regiment as a Japanese POW.
Hanover hosted Mr. Frank Bane, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Intergovernmental Relations, for three days of meetings with government and economics students. He spoke on careers in government, foreign service, welfare trends, and public welfare responsibilities, ending with a Tuesday night talk.

Hanover students study UN operations under Dr. Howard as three delegates await selection for the February 26 29 event at Indiana University. Indiana U sponsors the meeting and assigns countries, aiming for a Security Council or ICJ representation. Delegates will study the country’s economy politics and trusteeship policy in preparation.
