Federal tax on non prescription drugs to raise Manitoba costs
Manitoba Health Minister Larry Desjardins says the 10 percent federal sales tax on non prescription drugs will add at least six million dollars a year to drug costs for Manitobans. The tax applies to most non prescription drugs effective July 1 1985 with insulin allergy products feminine hygiene items and non prescription contraceptives exempt. Desjardins has raised the issue with the federal health minister and warns the burden falls on the sick and elderly who self medicate. The report also notes social notes from towns including Morden Hamiota and Moosomin with local visits and regional travel details.
