Canadian Weather Calendar Released by Climate Centre
Environment Minister Tom McMillan accepted the first copy of the 1986 Canadian Weather Calendar from Canadian Climate Centre employee Dave Phillips, the calendar's author. First produced in 1984 to recognize the weather service volunteers, it has become a popular collector’s item with dates marking significant weather events and milestones across Canada.

Manitoba Jobs and Training program starts its second year
The Manitoba government extends the Jobs and Training program into year two with 8 million from the Manitoba Jobs Fund. Len Evans says over 4,200 unemployed Manitobans secured new long term jobs and on the job training since September 1984, with wage assistance aiding more than 2,900 organizations. The program keeps its two parts direct employment and training and employment with similar terms, offering wage subsidies up to 4 or 4.80 per hour plus benefits and supports for up to three or two positions respectively, with applications open until funds run out.

National Farm Woman's Conference Slated in Charlottetown

Miniota Golf Club Fall Tournament Draws 96 Players

Bequest to Brandon University From Former Conservatory Teacher Mary Smart
Mary Smart, former piano teacher in Brandon Conservatory, leaves Brandon University a $200000 bequest with $10000 for an Economics scholarship in memory of her husband John Gregson Smart. The residue funds the School of Music, its buildings, equipment, instruments and scholarships. Executor is Robert A. Clement QC. Mrs. Smart died June 20 1985. She was born 1899 in Souris Manitoba. She studied at Brandon College and was active in the Registered Music Teachers Association and First United Church organist. She played the Alma Sifton Carillon and later the Peace Gardens bells.
