Dr. G. J. Racz told attendees at the University of Manitoba soils and fertilizer day that one pound of nitrogen fertilizer can raise about 25 pounds of wheat or barley. Three years of field trials show 60 pounds of nitrogen per acre boosts production on non fallow land low in available nitrogen.
Dr. Racz reports nitrogen use increases barley yields by 23 to 29 lbs per lb applied in wet areas and 23 to 25 lbs in dry regions. Wheat yields rise 20 to 28 lbs per lb applied, with drier zones showing strong gains and even dry years yielding profit. Protein content also improves with fertilizer, largely independent of climate.
