Hamiota and Shoal Lake volunteers fought a Sunday blaze that levelled Denwal Pharmacy Hamiota Ltd. The fire reported around 4:00 p.m. Sunday destroyed the drug store and prompted evacuation of nearby buildings as crews contained the flames and prevented spread.
On Saturday May 15, Hamiota Elementary hosts the 11th Annual Children's Folk Dance Festival drawing 40 plus groups from Birdtail River School Division towns such as Boissevain, Holland, Brandon, Virden, Souris and Inglis and from Miniota Kenton Foxwarren and Hamiota. Mr Lanny Gregory of Winnipeg adjudicates both sessions in the Hamiota Collegiate Gym.
A history notes recurring fires in Hamiota from the 1920s Cecil Hotel blaze to the 1976 Denwal Pharmacy destruction on Mothers Day. Kenny McMillan raised the alarm. six hoses fought the blaze but the Denwal building and stock were lost. wind spread smoke, coffee and sandwiches supported volunteers, and the village fire brigade listed Council and volunteers.
After a successful winter four teams played their last game on April 26. A pot luck supper followed at the home of Mr and Mrs Geo Peacock on April 27. Cards were enjoyed after a scrumptious supper. Winter membership stood at 20 with plans to organize again in the fall inviting more players.
