PEAQ method guides alfalfa cutting for optimum RFV

Manitoba Agriculture official John Patterson explains a simple PEAQ system to estimate alfalfa quality by measuring plant height and stem stage. With RFV dropping about 15 points from standing to harvest, cutting should start near RFV 165 to hit 150 at harvest. A yardstick and PEAQ chart are used, with sticks available for $15. A field example shows predicted RFV around 205 to 224 at late vegetative stage, guiding weekly checks. The annual feeder school is June 19–20 in Virden, $50, includes meals and proceedings, registration via Manitoba Cattle Producers. Patterson contact details provided.
