Winter 1907 Glory of Hamiota Gaslights
In the Manitoba town of Hamiota the full moon lit snow as gas lights failed when a lamplighter took the night off. The town once powered its own gas from carbide and water with engineer Arthur Heistermann tending the jets. Mischievous youths and economy measures darkened the streets, while the gas house remains a private residence and the tall tank now holds grain. The town later electrified with two engines to meet peak loads. The settlement began near a Hamilton post office, with Thomas Hamilton listed as post master in 1884, a clue to the town’s evolving name.
