The New Year message reflects January as a time to look back at 1966 and forward to 1967 with hope. It expresses confidence in Canada’s future as it marks its 100th birthday and urges Canadians to aid others, uphold generosity and fairness, and seek global peace and shared prosperity.
The Great North Western curlers set January 9 as the Manitoba North West Bonspiel returns with events in Birtle. New features include better prizes and the Centennial Bowl as a first time trophy, with memories of the old trains and curling regalia fueling spirits for the event.
Manitoba teachers' salaries are not comparable to those in other provinces, said George J. Strang at Shoal Lake. He urged raises due to rising living costs and a growing economy, praising the M.A.S.T. for realism and noting the Throne Speech pledge to increase provincial education funding. Bob Deveson reported on the elementary education conference warning of curriculum changes and resource needs. Harvey Kingden highlighted the August 1966 Clear Lake leadership seminar addressing goals, decision making, meetings, and change initiation.
Mrs. Wm. Alde died December 1 1966 at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Burlington in her 90th year. She leaves six sons Harold Vancouver Joseph Winnipeg Hudson James Burlington Edward Hubert Hamilton and several grandchildren. Interment White Chapel Cemetery Hamilton with six grandsons as pallbearers.
The McConnell Annual Pre schoolers Christmas party gathered 23 children and 13 mothers in the school basement for songs games and stories. All children participated in the Christmas Pageant with age appropriate costumes as lunch was served and gifts given. The party benefited from a donation by the Decker Legion to the kindergarten.
The Oakner 4-H Beef Calf Club held its second meeting December 20 in the school. Del Anderson was named Junior Leader. Plans were made for a Brandon tour on December 29. Four members delivered speeches and a Centennial project was discussed. A debate was scheduled for January.
The McConnell Explorers held a meeting in the McConnell School basement with 8 members 8 mothers and 2 visitors present. Debbie served as chairman and Eunice Della Holly and Susan conducted worship. Carol Elaine Karen and Debbie accompanied with carols while the girls sang year’s songs from the M F B camp and then played a few games.
Birdtail River School Division 38 held meetings at Shoal Lake on December 2 and 21 1966 with Trustees Rankin Stimpson dell Selby Inspector Funk present. Minutes approve treasurer reports, tuition and salary actions, reflect principal resignation of Tibbatts, new appointee Kingdon, and Tender calls for fuel oil for five collegiates.
Shirley Clubb and Lloyd Gerald Gibson wed at Gibson-Clubb United Church in Virden on December 10 at 2 PM officiated by Rev. I L Jackson. Bridesmaids and guests wore pastel dresses with white bouquets while a three tier white cake graced the reception. The couple reside at 296 Wellington Street East, Virden, after a brief wedding trip.
The McConnell 4 H Calf Club held its fourth meeting on December 20. Members planned a four point Brandon tour and a 60 dollar raffle or 1/4 beef prize for early 1967. Junior officers were elected: Elaine McConnell president, Larry Paterson vice, Carol Parker secretary, Allan Wright reporter.
On Monday December 26 the graduate teams faced the school squads in lighthearted basketball. The varsity girls won 34 to 31 and the boys 30 to 24. The previous night December 25 the Homecomers dance in the school auditorium was a success with music by the Markemen.
