Government Grants Do Not Meet Costs Says Economist
Dr. Chris Gerrard of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation argues that government business grants rarely pay for themselves. He cites a Queens University study showing bureaucratic costs at 15.4 cents per dollar and business costs at 7.7 cents, totaling 23.1 cents per grant dollar. He warns grants can distort markets and favor certain firms. Avram notes specific Manitoba, Ontario, and federal grant receipts totaling hundreds of thousands to several companies.
