Poor Attendance at B-ball Tourney in Hamiota

The senior boys basketball team showed limited spark at the tournament with Winkler defeating Harrison 49 to 38 and Souris 46 to 37. Ron Dyck led Winkler with 19 points while the author criticized effort and team discipline, thanking five supporters and noting a girls tournament upcoming.

Hospital Aid meeting at Mrs Hunter home February 15

The Hospital Aid group met with 13 members and 3 visitors. Mrs Hunter reported on the Hospital District Aid and requested more men’s magazines for the Hospital Book Cart. The group kept its $90 allocation and named a lunch booth committee led by Mrs Routledge. Mrs Smyth will canvass for Red Cross donations March 1. Next meeting is June 1 at Mrs Anderson’s. Mrs Dillon spoke on renovations and the March 1 vote. Five men attended. Lunch was served.

Birdtail River School Board Meeting Minutes 1971

The Birdtail River School Division 38 trustees met at Crandall on February 10 1971 at 1 00 p m with Waddell Butcher Fulton Rapley Hames Armitage Hyndman Lewycky Randall Falloon and Fouil listed as present The agenda included salary settlement inservice education youth centre at Hamiota requests from Brandon School Division and R M of Birtle on snow plowing and grants Use of Facilities at Shoal Lake Jr High and Elementary School Dance and Science Fair were approved for February 12 13 with other items including a Not Approved NFU Lecture Theatre Birtle March 6 and a March 30 conference for the Birdtail Association for Mentally Retarded plus approvals for Hamiota Collegiate Student Council Collegiate Auditorium Dance February 13 and St Lazare Athletic Association Family Day activities.

Legion Auxiliary met with officers named and plans

Eighteen members attended the February 10 meeting where officers were elected. A $25 library fund donation was approved. They agreed to serve at the March 6 men’s bonspiel and host a mixed bonspiel later in March. Door prize went to Mrs. Greenaway. lunch followed. The group approved minutes, appointments, and multiple school tenders and payments, adjourning at 5:30 p.m.

Funeral service for Allfred Pateman held in Campbell's Home

Obituary notes Allfred Pateman a retired Manitoba Telephone System employee with 33 years service and a World War II veteran awarded the Military Medal. He served in the Canadian Army with the Royal Canadian Signals and was a past master of Hamiota Masonic Lodge No. 84. A Mason ic guard and pallbearers attended. He lived in Deer Lodge Winnipeg and died in Brandon. He is survived by his wife of Hamiota and siblings.

District Hospital Notes Show Community Support Totals

The 1970 donations to Hamiota District Hospital reached 2602 dollars with regular support from the Hamiota Hospital District Ladies Aid supplying beds, kitchen items, and funds. Staff fundraising added 521 dollars. additional gifts total 442 dollars in cash or goods.

McConnell 4H Beef Club Plans Variety Concert

February 9 meeting at McConnell Community Centre with 19 members and two leaders. Plans announced for March Variety Concert and Public Speaking dates plus 4H Bonspiel on March 12 13 and 14. $30 sent to 4H Council. Senior members Elaine McConnell and Larry Paterson honored with 4H March.

Hamiota Hosts Busy Senior Basketball Schedule

Hamiota senior teams face a heavy near term slate as playoffs near. Dauphin visits on February 18 for the senior game while Strathclair meets the juniors in a preliminary. The girls host a sixth annual tournament with Vincent Massey Manitoba aiming to defend their title.

Minnedosa Wins Maitland Trophy in Bantam B Hockey

The Maitland Trophy Bantam B Hockey Tournament at Hamiota saw Minnedosa win the trophy for the second straight year with a 2-1 victory over Decker in the final. Hamiota and Miniota had earlier matches with Decker 9-5 over Miniota and Minnedosa 8-0 over Hamiota.
