Wheat Board’s singalong on barley marketing freedoms
Peter Holle of the Prairie Centre argues against the Canadian Wheat Board’s claim that monopoly benefits farmers. He cites Carter Loyns critiques, notes hidden data and administrative costs, and compares barley markets in the US Australia and Canada, urging openness and choice. Alberta pork and barley cases illustrate price gains from competition.

Portage recycling centre closes after city funds cut
Portage la Prairie's non profit Portage and District Recycling Inc. shut its doors on January 31 after the city denied funds. The board says 450 to 500 tonnes of recyclables would likely go to landfill and that continuing at current prices would require 30 000 a year. The city counters the environment fund is funded by general taxes and used to expand the landfill.
