The Hamiota Squirts under seven hockey team provided intermission entertainment at the Westman High School Hockey League all star game in Hamiota on February 1. Four groups relayed to collect groceries from centre ice, drawing strong fan and player enthusiasm.
The Hamiota Donor's Choice campaign, running March 15 to April 15, 1997, will support 11 charities including Alzheimer Society, Canadian Cancer Society, Red Cross, Salvation Army, and newcomer Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Volunteers will canvass door to door urging generous contributions.
A 47-year-old Hamiota area farmer was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to assault causing bodily harm. His 43-year-old hired hand received eight months after pleading guilty to common assault. The pair attacked the farmer’s wife during a disputed entry, with the woman’s four-year-old son pleading for mercy, and the accused faces two years of supervised probation with counseling and a five year weapon ban.
