Manitoba Beef Plan Abandoned By Wednesday Opt Out Deadline
Agriculture Minister Jim Downey announced that Manitoba beef producers may withdraw from the Beef Producers Income Assurance Plan by May 31 1980 after settling current accounts. The program started in 1975 to stabilize cattle income, with 6036 participants receiving 33.7 million in subsidies in its first two years. By January 1980 active participants numbered 3641 with 41.2 million in subsidies paid. Opting out has cost 14.9 million in subsidies to producers. Downey warned the plan discouraged production and contributed to cattle herd decline, urging a transition to a voluntary stabilization program compatible with market needs and future expansion. Local agricultural reps will provide further details.

Sprayer Test Run Tips and Common Field Problems
When buying a sprayer, test it in the afternoon to spot issues before the season. Use water rather than herbicide for fixes. Common problems include pressure loss from regulator or suction screen, worn pump, excessive pressure from by pass hose, and erratic gauge readings from a sensitive gauge or air cushion loss. Remedies cover adjusting regulators cleaning screens replacing worn parts enlarging hoses and adding air chambers.
