Firearm Accident Rate Drops in Manitoba in 1979

Manitoba reports 27 firearm accidents in 1979, two fewer than 1978, marking the lowest rate since the 1964 Hunter and Firearm Safety Program began. Two fatalities, 12 personal safety incidents, 11 during pest control, nine non hunting.

Grants Approved for Manitoba Child Care Agencies

Winnipeg Manitoba Community Services Minister George Minaker announced six point six million six hundred thousand dollars in grant authorizations for six child caring agencies across the province. The funds fund eight percent more than last year plus adjustments for 1979 80 shortfalls and some program expansion. The Manitoba Foster Parents Association will receive up to six thousand five hundred dollars and up to six million five hundred ninety two thousand six hundred dollars will be distributed to Winnipeg and regional child welfare groups including the Jewish Child and Family Services and several regional societies.

Unemployment Rate Declines in Manitoba in March

Manitoba's seasonally adjusted unemployment fell to 5.6 percent in March, down 0.2 points from February, while the national rate held at 7.4 percent. Actual Manitoba rate eased to 6.6 percent from 7.1, with youth and women showing notable declines. Employment rose by 5,000 to 443,000, while unemployment fell by 3,000 to 31,000. Manufacturing added strength with 68,000 employed, up 2,000 from February and 7,000 year over year.
