Sioux Nation to Become Farmers on Fort Peck Reservation
The Sioux Audion tribe, once famed for General Custer’s defeat, will transform with the Fort Peck reservation in northeastern Montana opening. Each of about 4,000 remaining Sioux receives a farm, while 1,345,000 acres are to be opened to white settlers with filings in Glasgow May 1 to Sept 20. Drawings for 8,408 farms of 160 acres follow. Government estimates full cultivation will add 25,000,000 bushels of grain annually to the northwest.
