Scores of drunken foreigners roam the hills between the Youghiogheny and Monongahela rivers threatening mine fires. Mine inspectors call the Shoenberger mine blaze arson by fire bugs. Guards are posted at key mines as some 3000 frenzied miners menace nearby towns.
President Roosevelt received and accepted the resignation of Rear Admiral Willard Brownson as chief of the bureau of navigation. The resignation takes effect immediately and no reason is given.
Mrs. John Shook of Bryan Ohio swallowed a hairpin at age eighteen. It remained undetected for over two decades until last year when persistent pain led to X ray, revealing the pin an inch beneath the skin above the hip. A doctor removed it with ease.
A 60 000 dollar blaze destroyed a six story brick building at 210 214 East Ninth street in Cincinnati Ohio. Owned by Joseigh Richter the site housed Richter Co brass founders Rusche Co shoe manufacturers and Louis G Freeman machinist. The fire started on the second floor about 730 last night and was fueled by a stiff wind. Officials say waste on the second floor may have self ignited. The loss is insured.
Chattanooga Tenn December 24 1910 For the first time in the city all saloons will close on Christmas day as agreed by the saloon men to observe the holiday. The move has drawn favorable comment from many residents.
Searching teams at the Darr Mine in Jacobs Creek Pennsylvania reached the No 27 entrance and recovered seventy four bodies in a single heap on December 24.
Democratic National Committee chair Thomas Taggart announces the time and place for the next national convention. The 1908 gathering is set for July 7 in Denver Colorado with Urey Woodson as national secretary and a special committee named for convention arrangements.
Hudson Ohio voted dry in a special election 167 for dry and 79 against wet. The victory enables J W Ellsworth a local millionaire coal magnate to donate a $125000 waterworks sewage and electric lighting system free of charge if liquor is barred forever. Hudson was home to Ellsworth and once the Western Reserve University seat.
Detective Hetterich investigates the disappearance of Christmas toys stored by Mrs. William J. Doty at the Tegelbecker home. The house was found in disorder with a rear window ajar and a violin among the hidden toys. Doty and Tegelbecker, German immigrants and friends, await word on the family’s return from Cincinnati.
State Food Commissioner Dunlap received a Cincinnati man's letter about using wood flour in bakeries. He labeled the sample pulverized sawdust and noted the writer plans to sprinkle it on baking boards to prevent sticking. The man seeks clarity on legality before importing for Ohio trade.
Cincinnati December 24 under the bankruptcy court the sale of the Union Maid Tobacco company machinery stock fixtures etc occurred yesterday The Eight Hour Tobacco company bought the property for 2550 as an entirety Union Maid was appraised weeks ago at 2950 but then excluded manufactured stock It is believed the sale will be confirmed ensuring an early dividend for creditors
In Lima Ohio on December 24 A C Hinckley master mechanic at the C H and D railway shops opened his private office door and felt the porter George Manning fall against him. Manning died from heart trouble causing the fatal incident.
New York reports that the Salvation Army prepared a Christmas feast for 2500 poor families in Greater New York. Dinners will be distributed in large baskets designed to feed a family of five or six, marking a departure from previous years at Madison Square Garden.
Dayton Ohio December 24 President Frank T Huffman of the Davis Sewing Machine company says men laid off recently will be returned to work due to improving conditions. Business is improving with other large firms in the city and it is expected industrial conditions will normalize soon.

A New York syndicate led by T. J. Cullen takes control of the Burnet House stock and all furnishings and fixtures. Ownership passes from Boston's John W. Dunklee and his son in law Nathaniel U. Walker. The Dec 24 deal closes yesterday in Cincinnati.
Layton Hines, a Black man, is found guilty of first degree murder with mercy recommended. Anna Markowitz, a young Jewish woman, was killed at McCabe's park on August 4. Abe Cohan was shot and died later. Hines denied the confession under oath, while relatives asserted his alibi.
A series of marriage licenses lists multiple couples with ages occupations and hometowns including Harry Thompson 28 paper maker Middletown and Mary Knorr 28 cook Blue Ball. Other couples include Charles Soriman 23 machinist Hamilton and Josephine Wehr 24 Hamilton and more with various ages trades and parishes.

The Champion Coated paper mills report no change in the strike. About two hundred workers who did not report to work last night remain on strike while other sections operate with a full staff. The union papermakers insist on maintaining eight hour shifts and will continue to hold out.
Albert Mingna was arrested on Smith's Farm south of town by Deputy State Game Warden C. C. Aeton of Cincinnati on illegal hunting charges. He had several rabbits, appeared before Squire Morton, and was fined 25 plus costs with his gun forfeited to the state. Mingna faces a costly rabbit lesson.
New York reports a 35,000,000 bushel barley shortfall endangering malt supplies. Gottfried Krueger, president of the New Jersey State Brewers association, says malt houses will not contract beyond three months, risking higher prices and reduced brewing.
Nina Bloom files a divorce and alimony petition against John A. Bloom in probate court after he deserted her in March in Cincinnati. They married February 25, 1904 and have one child. She denies other pleadings and recounts financial distress. Also listed are criminal transcripts from Mayor Thomas docket including multiple grand larceny cases.
Columbus Ohio December 24 city council adopted a resolution directing the board of service to hire as many laid off factory workers as possible for public works. Workers will be paid 10 cents an hour and require factory certificates showing layoffs due to slack times.

During a Lindley's hall dance the colored Elks, Harvey Bass and Robert Harris, visited the cafe and fought. Detectives Graf and Metcalfe arrested both men for fighting. they were locked up and later released on bond pending a hearing.
