Special to the Democrat Sun from Old Point Comfort Virginia December 16 President Roosevelt in full dress aboard the yacht Mayflower leads the fleet with the band playing The Star Spangled Banner. Admiral Evans greets the president aboard as ships form a single column for the Pacific voyage with a detailed carrier formation and travel schedule through December to May. The cost of the fleet’s supply includes coal and food provisions totaling about several million dollars.

Admiral Evans is described as gruff and capable with a big heart and sharp brain. He mixes discipline with humane leadership, treating every sailor as an American citizen and prioritizing their comfort while commanding sixteen battleships and 15 000 men across South America and the Pacific.

About six flags flew Monday to honor the start of a sixteen ship Pacific cruise under Rear Admiral Evans. Ensign John F. Connor of this city serves on the Kentucky and will join the voyage starting from Hampton Roads Virginia through the southern seas.

London dispatch reports Lord Kelvin the renowned scientist has suffered a serious relapse after a period of illness. Members of his circle are deeply concerned about his condition.
Louis B. Sternberg a Kansas City Kansas grocer was killed and his wife Mrs Mattie Sternberg wounded when robbers attacked their store last night. The couple were not found until twelve hours later.
In Springfield on December 16 Charles C. Bauer faced embezzlement charges as city auditor. Mrs Shirley Bauer, formerly Miss Shirley Neal, cried out during prosecutor Laybourn's reference to Colonel James F. Neal's illness. The court adjourned for arguments with a verdict expected late afternoon.
Alie Allen was arrested Monday afternoon at the Two Mile bridge on charges of assaulting George Phillipp the previous Saturday afternoon. A warrant for Phillipp's arrest will also be sought.
Otto Schmigler, a Hungarian tailor, shot and fatally wounded Mrs. Caroline Webster and seriously wounded Miss Myrtle Spence before killing himself in Mrs. Webster’s home in Columbus. Schmigler had been unemployed and despondent. reports say his advance toward Spence was rejected.

Parkersburg West Virginia on December 16 Rus sell Drake who played Santa at a holiday auction sale nearly burned to death when his false beard caught fire from a toy steam engine. He leaped through a window and fled into the street where bystanders restrained and extinguished the flames, leaving Drake with painful burns.
George F. Fiske a New York woman formerly of Philadelphia and Pittsburg and press agent for the Jamestown exposition was struck and killed by a Pennsylvania train in Trenton on December 16.
Colonel John Jacob Astor is ill and confined to his Fifth Avenue home with a severe grip that may lead to pneumonia, according to reports from New York on December 16.

Mrs. James Blair died at Seal yesterday evening aged 70 from old age and debility. Abraham Lenhart, a Civil War veteran, also died yesterday at age 70.
