Three Guthrie County Graduates Earn Drake Degrees
Guthrie Center resident Nicholas Dowd Panora resident James Vandevanter and Yale native John Hooper were among more than 800 Drake University graduates May 16. Judge O Jo Kerner of the US Court of Appeals Seventh Circuit gave the commencement address. Dowd earned a BS in education Vandevanter a BS in pharmacy and Hooper a BS in business administration.

Nearly Half Questionnaires Returned in Guthrie County Study
About 2000 questionnaires have been returned to officials in Guthrie County for a manpower survey led by Wayne Clark. The return rate is roughly 40 percent of 4915 mailed, with a target of 4000. The study seeks to measure manpower supply and identify local job positions.

Tractor Mishap Claims 15 Year Old Linden Boy
A 15 year old Linden youth, Kerry Lee Culver, died Saturday when he fell from a tractor and was run over on a road near Bays Branch. Funeral services for Kerry will be held Tuesday at Panora Christian church. He was a Panora Linden freshman. Survivors include his parents, a brother, two sisters, and grandparents. Sheriff's report notes the tractor pulled a four row hoe down a hill and may have struck a soft shoulder or obstacle before the tragedy. George Minary, 81, Panora, died Sunday at home. funeral services Wednesday at Beidelman Funeral Home, with interment at East Cemetery. He was a retired farmer. survivors include wife Irene, two daughters, five grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. His brother was a former Guthrie County treasurer.

Seven Guthrie 4-Hers Named Delegates to Washington DC
Seven Guthrie County 4 H youth were selected to join a 10 day citizenship study trip to Washington DC. The group includes Sharon Calvert Jean Tighe Thana Hansen Karen Godwin Jana Elgin Ann Anderson Casey Bob Wolf and others from Guthrie Center Jamaica Panora and Yale. They will join a 35 member Central Town Extension Area contingent for National 4 H Center programs focusing on civic engagement. Guthrie County Youth Foundation provides a $50 scholarship per participant toward trip costs with the balance covered by the youths themselves. The trip runs from June 19 to June 27.

Bids for a contract will not be advertised until right of way land west of West End Cafe is acquired, likely delaying work beyond May. Four Garretts Hurt In Stuart Area Crash
Four members of a Des Moines family were treated for cuts and bruises after their car rolled north of Stuart Friday evening. Mrs Patricia Garrett and children Sherry Ruth and Robert Garrett were held for examination after the vehicle, which came over a hill, swerved to miss a cow and calf in the traffic lane and was demolished. In a separate incident on Yale Street, a Cabelka driven car swerved to avoid a hole and struck a parked Chaloupka pickup, causing about 300 dollars in damage.

Templeman Charged and Held After Vehicle Tampering
Greg Templeman, 17, Guthrie Center, is held in the county jail in lieu of 300 bond after being charged in Robinson's Justice court with tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.
