Jamaica Girl ISU Honoree

Sherry Meinecke of Jamaica was among 26 Iowa State students initiated into the new Kappa Delta Pi chapter at Iowa State University. The ceremony recognized juniors with a 3.25 GPA who qualified for the national scholastic honorary in education.

Weather Update: Rain Totals Rain On Area Fields

Heavy rainfall drenched the area with 46 inches tallied Monday morning, adding to the 2.46 inches recorded last week. The wet spell continued through press time, soaking fields and raising moisture levels across the region.

Car Hits Cow Causing Minor Damage in Thompson Township

Eugene Paul Pohl of Jamaica sustained about $350 damage to his car when it struck a cow on a county road in Thompson township last Wednesday evening. Deputy Sheriff Roger Brown reported the collision involved a cow owned by Art Kuster.

Plane Crash Leaves Two Walkaway In Guthrie Center Field

Two men Jack Laughter and Ralph James Sorrells from Denison escaped unharmed after their Piper Cherokee 140 crashed on a field across from Guthrie Center airport Saturday evening about 7 30. Sheriff Jester Petersen said they took off toward a closed runway aiming to clear the river but struck a road bank after overflying Nixon feed building and landed right side up. The aircraft was a total loss.

Covault Joins Caravan Visiting Six State Region

Gifford Covault, Guthrie Center Chamber of Commerce president, is part of the See Iowa Caravan IV touring six states bordering Iowa. The 90-person group from 43 Iowa counties promotes visiting out of state residents to discover Iowa. The caravan, sponsored by the Iowa Development Commission, will stop in Omaha, Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, Mankato, Madison, Rockford, Springfield, St. Louis, Jefferson City, Kirksville, Centerville and Indianola. The Good Will Ambassadors left Sunday and return May 15.

Menlo Girl Is Graduate Of Iowa Methodist

Pauline Ramona Moore of Menlo is among 69 Iowa Methodist nursing seniors to receive diplomas Friday in Des Moines First United Methodist Church. Kenneth Austin of Equitable will give the commencement address. The class of 1971 marks a large graduating group as enrollments rise. the baccalaureate service was held May 7 in Jester Auditorium.

Low Rental Corporation To Elect Officers

The Guthrie Center Senior Citizens Housing corporation will hold its annual meeting Wednesday evening May 26 at 7 30 in the county courthouse meeting room. All stockholders are urged to attend. A four unit apartment built last winter opened about two months ago. three units are currently rented. Plans are underway for another four unit addition. Rites Held Monday for Two Drowning Victims

Funeral services were held at the First Congregational church in Stuart for 43 year old Yale man Jack Hein and his eight year old son Kevin Lee who drowned after a boat capsized in Bays Branch near Panora. The father, who had earlier saved his other son Robert, died in an effort to rescue Kevin as rescue teams searched through rough water aided by scuba divers from Boone. The bodies were recovered Thursday after 18 hours underwater with rescue efforts hampered by three foot waves and dangerous conditions. Elizabeth Hein, widow, and seven other children survive. siblings include Roy Hein of Guthrie Center.

Saturday Rites for Mrs Kopeska Audubon Burial

Services for Mrs Eva Kopeska 77 were at the United Methodist church in Guthrie Center with Rev Ora Keep and Rev M J Kinney in charge. Interment followed at Maple Grove cemetery, Audubon. Surviving relatives include three sons Albert Adar Wayne and Lyle Guthrie Center two daughters Violet Shearman Omaha and Virginia Madison Hamlin a sister Julia Hunt Audubon and 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Legion District Meet in Harlan for 7th District

Guthrie county Legionnaires and auxiliary members will attend the 7th District Legion and Auxiliary convention Saturday in Harlan. Registration begins at 8:30 with a day of meetings and a noon banquet at the Vets Memorial auditorium. Wayne Keefe of Oskaloosa, department commander, and Mrs Rex Redinbaugh, department vice president, will speak.

Charges Sent To Grand Jury In False Uttering Case

Ikan Kracht Jr was bound over to the grand jury after charges of false uttering of checks in S E Robinson's justice court. He remains in county jail after not posting a $500 bond. Arrested Friday in Audubon county per Sheriff Lester Petersen.
