Virginia Arrasmith, librarian, announced memorials at the city library funded by the Women's club and Garden Club. Florence Masters is honored with a book. another for Miss Masters features Keeping the Plants You Pick and This is India. A Patience Ellett memorial book was funded by The First National Bank of Perry, with a wall plaque listing benefactors Fred Tucker and Ross Merrill.

Lady Golfers Open Season With Coffee at Clubhouse

Women golfers and club house members open their season Thursday at 9 with a coffee gathering. Mrs Ruth Covault, president, says the meeting will elect officers and plan activities for the coming season including invitation tourneys and steak nights. Members and prospective joiners are invited.

Kay Abramsohn Named Honorary at University of Arizona

Kay Abramsohn was tapped for membership into Chimes, the national Junior Women’s honorary society at the University of Arizona. Daughter of Dr and Mrs J L Abramsohn of Guthrie Center, she was among 250 students honored for scholarship and leadership. initiation will be May 5.

Prices Again Normal Gas War Is Over

After a three week gas war in Guthrie Center and Panora prices returned to normal Saturday morning with regular at 37.9 cents per gallon from major oil firms. The drop to 21.9 cents during the war driven by Sinclair competition led stations to sell large quantities, with customers loading drums and tanks.

Crawley Rites Held Saturday Area Resident

Funeral services were held Saturday at First Christian Church for Clarence Harold Crawley who died Wednesday at Guthrie County Hospital. Rev. Jerry Palmer led the service, with interment in Union Cemetery. A Guthrie County native, Crawley is survived by wife Hilda, three children Dennis, Thomas, and Richard of Ellsworth AFB, two brothers Jess of Waukee and Chester of Guthrie Center, and three sisters Mrs Harold Coe, Mrs Elmore Ludwig, and Mrs Sam Beattie of Casey.

Guthrie Center Musicians Earn Solo and Ensemble Ratings

Guthrie Center musicians earned high honors at Lake City state competition with one ratings across large groups band divisions and individual entries. The Tiger band girls glee and mixed chorus each earned one ratings joining the 32 ratings already tallied two weeks earlier. The girls glee was among 13 entries and the mixed chorus among 17. Sixteen concert bands competed. Tom Rosenberger led vocal music and Dale Menning directed instrumentalists.

Floyd Brown Found Dead In Panora Home

County Opens Labor Survey for Guthrie County Area

Guthrie County launches the Area Resources Survey and Manpower Study. About 4,500 mailings go out May 13 with three questionnaires per household for residents 16 and older. Results will be published in a book for industry and filed in the Library of Congress.

Alcohol Still Biggest Accident Factor In March Deaths

Iowa highway fatalities totaled 50 in March with alcohol at crash scenes accounting for 15 deaths or 30 percent. Twenty percent of victims might have survived with seat belts. Crashes on highways claimed 39 of 60 victims. five died on city streets. four on county roads. two on interstates. Thirty five victims were male and fifteen female. six were pedestrians.

Seven Area Students Named to Deans List at Iowa State

Seven area students were named to the Deans' list for the winter quarter at Iowa State University in Ames with grade point averages of 3.5 or higher and at least 15 credit hours. The honorees include Jule Falconer Adair Karen Jackson Tagley Joe Calder Willard Johnston Bayard Patricia Benton Guthrie Center Van Cline Menlo and Dan Whestone Stuart.

Petersen Fined For Allowing Ineligible Driver

David Petersen in Guthrie Center was fined 25 and costs after pleading guilty to letting an unauthorized person drive a motor vehicle. The case stems from last winter when Russell Hammond drove the Petersen car involved in a crash near the west city limits. Passenger Marvin Cline was paralyzed and hospitalized in Des Moines. Hammond previously had a suspended license and was later charged for driving with a suspended license. A grand jury pending on Hammond relates to leaving the scene of the accident the night Cline was injured.

Footfeed Sticks Send Car Out Of Control

An estimated 450 damage resulted when Randy Sloss could not free a floor mat stuck under the accelerator. The car sped into a ditch and embankment southwest of Guthrie Center. No charges were filed and Sloss was not injured according to Sheriff Lester Petersen.

County 4-Hers Contribute To United Service Program

Guthrie county 4 H members have contributed 138 50 to the state United Service program. Doug Henderson says the new Town year program lets clubs contribute to IFYE and the Iowa 4 H foundation. Local clubs that have not contributed can do so by bringing funds to the extension office.
