Plan for Panora bridge and World Service truck visit

The Guthrie Center hosts the Church World Service truck on April 19 with clothing and blanket donations urged through April 18. Local churches should deliver packed items to the Methodist Church. lightweight clothing and blankets are in highest demand. A new Panora bridge on highway 44 will be 250 feet north of the current span, 300 feet long and 44 feet wide, replacing a 130 by 20 foot structure. Construction to start July, cost about 355000 dollars. highway 4 north of 44 will receive a 10.4 mile asphalt stretch costing 472000 dollars, starting in May and finishing in about four weeks.

Ex Governor Co Purchaser of Adair Bank

The Rochholz control of the Exchange Bank of Adair was sold effective March 13. Frank Farrar, former governor of South Dakota, and Omaha businessman Robert Kruger acquired controlling interest. The bank keeps its name and staff, with Dean Rochholz and Donald Kierney continuing in leadership. Kierney will relocate to Adair as president.

Three Receive I Ratings At Speech Contest

Guthrie Center students competed in the state speech contest in Des Moines Saturday and earned three one ratings and nine twos. Instructor Hi A Schmitz notes Nita Lydon received a one rating in oral interpretative prose literature while Kathy Rasmussen and Merle Merryman earned ratings in original oratory. Two ratings went to Melodee Menefee: Debbie Hall one and Janice Miller two. also Bonnie Christensen Nancy Mikkelson Nita Lydon and Jacquee Dickey received ratings.

Guthrie Center Banquet Honors Guthrie Basketball Teams

Dana college head coach Jerry Hainforth will be featured speaker at the Guthrie Center basketball banquet honoring both girls and boys. The March 26 event at 7 p.m. in the elementary school is a covered dish affair. Athletes receive season awards and teammate voted honors. Rainforth, Blair’s Outstanding Young Citizen 1969-70, serves in multiple roles at Dana.

James Denny Named to 1971 Royal Court of Honor

James Denny of Farm Bureau Insurance Guthrie County agency earns 1971 Royal Court of Honor and 1971 Agents Advisory Council for outstanding sales and service to policyholders in 1970. He has served Guthrie County since 1967 and is among thirteen Iowa agents honored.

Guthrie Center approves 4.9 percent teacher raise

Guthrie Center school board approved a 4.9 percent salary hike for the coming year, raising starting pay to 7000 for new teachers and boosting district costs by about 22,000 annually for 53 teachers. State aid and tax-frozen mill levy provide funding, with total teacher pay accounting for 460,000 of an 718,000 budget.

Three Area Students Named to SUI Dean’s List

Three Guthrie Center students at the State University of Town were named to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s List for the first semester. All carried at least 12 hours and held a 3.50 GPA or higher. Honored were Marcia Kent, Nancy Loeb, and Nancy Taylor.

Farm Safety Classes Delayed Again in Guthrie County

The farm safety tractor training course in Guthrie County is postponed for a week with enrollment extended to March 26. George Richards will instruct 24 hours of sessions at Baldwin Implement Company Panora from March 29 to April 10, with ages 14 and 15 eligible and 12 current enrollees.

Kindergarten Round Up Day Set For Friday

Elementary principal Ted Hansen announced the Kindergarten Round Up will be held March 26 from 1:00 to 1:30 pm at the elementary school multipurpose room. Parents must bring their child’s birth certificate as the child must be 5 on or before September 15, 1971. Pre kindergarteners will be supervised by teachers and aides. Information will be given about pre school orientation week and summer school. Both parents are urged to attend if possible.

April 20 Date For New School Board Election

A special election for school board directors in the Stuart Menlo district is set for Tuesday April 20. Filing petitions closes March 31 with at least 10 voter signatures from each district. One director to be elected from each of five districts, treasurer elected at large. Directors with fewest votes to serve until September 1972 and 1973 elections. all take office July 1.

Bayard school board accepts resignations and offers contracts

Bayard Community School Board accepted the resignations of two high school teachers Miss Judy Dissinger and Miss Dianna Poffenberger. All other staff were offered contracts for the next year. Pamela Jane Peterson was named a Miss Omaha scholarship page finalist. Four Stuart High School students were named Outstanding Teenagers of America for 1971. The Adair Youth Center opened with games and entertainment. Yale Saddle Club scheduled an area event.
