Three Arrested in Guthrie County Theft Case

Guthrie County deputies jailed 16 year old Danny Freeman and 18 year old James Darrow, both of Menlo, on $1000 bonds after they were linked to a break in at Casey Hardware. Items stolen totaled about 400 dollars in guns, ammunition and radios. Terry Jensen joined in a separate case for breaking and entering and safe cracking. A raid at a residence yielded radios and stereos and other gear, suspected to be stolen from Guthrie and neighboring counties. Eddie Tallman faced assault charges and a 10 day sentence in JP court. Michael Winefeldt, tied to Osceola and Guthrie cases, was arrested on a check charge and previously in Guthrie County on a forgery case.

Drinking Drivers Problem in Iowa Seen Decline

Iowa road death toll fell in January to 47, a 26 percent drop from last year and a nine percent five year decline. The decrease extended into mid February with officials blaming bad weather and road conditions. About 34 percent of deaths involved unbelted occupants, and three times as many drivers were killed as passengers. Four percent of victims were pedestrians, with fatalities reported across all 99 counties and during dark hours.

Deadline for Safety Training School Nears

Guthrie County offers safety training courses for 14 and 15 year old farm youth. Registration closes March 12 with a $10 fee due at the Extension Office for the first class limited to 24 students in Panora. If demand exists, a second class may be formed in April taught by George Richards of Bagley.

FHA County Supervisor Begins Duties in Audubon Guthrie

John R. Rohlf has assumed duties as Farmers Home Administration county supervisor for Audubon and Guthrie counties, replacing Ambrose H. McGuire. An agriculture business graduate from IENS State University, Rohlf previously worked for the FHA at Shenandoah and Denison. Kenneth Blair remains assistant county supervisor for Guthrie and Audubon counties. Office days run 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in Guthrie Center on Mondays and 9:00 am to 12 noon in Audubon on Tuesdays. Rohlf and his wife will reside in Guthrie Center.

County Juniors Reminded Essay Deadline Near

Deadline for the 14th annual Youth Tour to Washington contest sponsored by Guthrie REC and 53 other Rural Electric Cooperatives in Iowa. Entry deadline is March 29. Officials say requests for information are behind last year's pace. Two tours are awarded, offering two chances to win. Open to area high school juniors.

Fred Schoonover Rites Monday at First Methodist

Funeral services for Fred Schoonover 79 were held Monday at 10 30 am at the First Methodist Church. He died Friday at Guthrie Counts Hospital. Interment followed at Union Cemetery with graveside rites by the Omar B Shearer American Legion post. Survived by wife Coral three daughters and two sons with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

State Aid Checks To Guthrie County Schools

Guthrie County Superintendent C. H. Stokes received the third payment of State Equalization Aid from the State Comptroller on February 22, 1971. Each school's grant is more than double the sum of the previous two installments, which were in September and December. The two earlier payments totaled 93,538, while the current third installment totals 237,791. Each district in Guthrie County will get about 237,791 in the final May payment of the school year.

Patience Ellett, 94, died Saturday noon at the New Homestead. Services were Monday afternoon at the United Methodist church with Rev. Milton Kinney officiating. Interment followed in Union Cemetery. A former school teacher, she taught many years at Audubon and DeSoto. survivors include nieces and cousins led by Helen Pinell. Perry

Panora City Seeks $50,000 Sewer Construction Funds

Panora residents face about 50000 dollars to build a sewer treatment plant to meet state law. Total project cost is around 138000 dollars, with 91000 dollars from federal funds and the rest covered by bonds. Bond options include sewer revenue bonds with higher rates, general obligation bonds, or a mix of both.

Carroll to close Guthrie County selective service office

The Guthrie County Selective Service and Carroll Headquarters office will merge under a state plan reducing Iowa offices from 99 to about 22. Carroll will host the central draft office serving Guthrie County with up to five offices consolidated there. Local boards retain induction authority while registrars are designated per county to ease 18 year old registrations.

Area FFA Contests Convene With 350 Members Present

Approximately 350 FFA members from 32 schools met in Guthrie Center on Saturday for district contests. Eight parliamentary procedure teams, eight extemporaneous speakers, eight public speakers, eight programs of work, and twelve freshman creed speakers took part, along with manual quizzes for welders and secretary treasurer books judging. Local competitors included Rick Robson, Randy Chalfant, Doug Sheeder, Chuck Willenberg, and Don Sloss, plus other FFA members in various contests.

Road Hazard Blamed for Two Area Wrecks

Blowing snow on Highway 44 west of Guthrie Center caused two weekend accidents. Edwin R Christensen, 23, of Davenport drove a 1969 Ford convertible westbound and, after pulling to the median to avoid a school bus, struck a highway post, injuring no one and causing $400 damage. No charges filed.
