License Plates Due By Friday March 12

Lowans without current plates face a five per cent penalty in addition to a prior five per cent fee for late issuance. Motorists have until March 12 to obtain new plates. Beginning March 15 police will issue summons for improper registration. Mail-in payments may not arrive before March 15.

Forty Nine Speech Kids Head for State

Forty nine county high school speech students advanced to state competition after the district contest in Guthrie Center. Twenty one schools were represented with multiple honors across categories including interpretive prose, humorous acting, storytelling, original oratory, dramatic acting, extemporaneous speaking, and radio news. Kindergarten Roundup and local school updates

The Panora area schedules a kindergarten roundup for PL youngsters entering first grade next fall on April 2 in Linden. Children must be five by September 15. NFO Meeting Set For Tuesday Evening

The Guthrie county National Farmers Organization will meet Tuesday at 8 p m in the Women s Club rooms. President Milo Rees urged all members to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Panora Woman First Iowa 1971 Traffic Fatality

A Panora woman, 30, identified as Diane Glen Godwin, was Iowa’s first traffic fatality of 1971 when her car left Highway 141 two miles east of Bagley, rolled over multiple times and overturned into a ditch. She had recently moved back to Panora from Perry. Her husband Glen survives.

Farm Safety Sessions Open Registration for Youth

County extension director Dave May announces registration for farm safety training to help 14 to 16 year olds legally work on farms. George Richards of Bagley will teach in Panora with a 24 student limit and a registration fee due at the extension office. If enough interest, a second class may be held in April. The program aligns with federal laws and aims to reduce injuries while avoiding heavy penalties for farmers hiring untrained youths.

Saturday Rites For Ray Davis In Bayard

Services were held Saturday morning from the United Methodist church for Ray Davis 80 who died Thursday in Greene county. Burial was in Willow township cemetery. The Rev Ora Reep and Father James Free Tran had charge of the services. Davis had farmed southeast of Bayard since 1940. Survivors include his widow Katherine and eight children including Jack Davis Mrs Helen Hallerman and Mrs May Curl of the Bayard area.

Federal Land Bank Slashes Lending Rate

The Federal Land Bank Association of Perry will cut interest rates by one half of one percent on new and existing variable rate loans. The reduction applies to loans closed and applications taken until further notice, and to past variable rate loans. The Perry bank serves Boone Dallas Guthrie and Greene Counties with about 24 million in loans to 957 members.

Hit By Tree Dean Heckman Improves After Injury

Dear Heckman of Adair is improving after a tree cutting accident Wednesday. He suffered a skull fracture cracked jaw and a perforated eardrum from falling tree portions while helping a rural electric crew near his farm. His wife said the tree twisted and fell the wrong way trapping him.

Ellsworth Dean's List honors in fall semester

Three Guthrie County students at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls were named to the Dean's List for the fall semester. To qualify, students must earn a 3.2 grade point average. among honorees is Jean Marie Lloyd.

The Guthrie county ASC committee was presented a citation for Safety covering May 1, 1967 through Dec 31 of the previous year. Charles M Niles, district storage supervisor from Milo, Iowa, presented it. Over the two year period there were no injuries or related losses.
