Intruders Use Sheets For Ropes In Jamaica Farm Burglary

Three ski masked burglars used bedsheets to bind Durwood Scheib and his wife at their Jamaica farm. They tore out telephone lines, fled with the Scheib pickup camper and a car believed to have been driven, then were traced by sheriffs. The couple freed themselves and notified Sheriff Wright. Missing money under $5. 15 officers from Dallas Guthrie Greene Counties assisted.

Farm Bureau Scholarship To Adair Girl

Guthrie County awards a two year Farm Bureau Scholarship of 320 dollars to Marlos Richter a senior at Adair Casey and daughter of James and Mrs Richter. A panel of five judges interviewed her and reviewed applications selecting from four Guthrie County seniors.

Farm program explained at county meetings

Three sites have been chosen for talks to explain the 1971 Feed Grain program to county residents. Meetings led by ASCS chair John Crabb will be held at Bayard Legion Hall 1:30 p.m. February 24 Casey Community Building 1:30 p.m. February 25 Guthrie Center City Hall 7:30 p.m. February 25. Crabb urged all farmers to attend.

Linden A Glaucomobile to offer free glaucoma tests

Linden will host Count M4 Linden A Glaucomobile on Tuesday and Wednesday March 16 and 17 offering free glaucoma tests, aimed at early detection of the second leading cause of blindness in the country.

Bronze Star Presented To Robert Tunink

Robert J Tunink of Guthrie Center received the Bronze Star Medal in Vietnam for meritorious service during military operations against enemy forces. He is a mechanic with the 815th Engineer Battalion and the son of Mr and Mrs John R Tunink. A 1967 Guthrie Center High School graduate, he entered the Army in 1968.

Nine Receive One Ratings At Southwest Town Contest

Guthrie Center instrumental students earned I ratings at the Southwest Town Solo and Ensemble contest on Feb. 13 in Corning. Wolff Fire Fund Reaches 650 In Donations

The Gilbert Wolff fire fund has reached 650 dollars as of Monday morning with more donations expected. The Wolffs lost their farmhouse and possessions in a February 12 fire and have received blankets pots and pans clothing and other donations from local residents.

Westmar Students Tour Local Industries in LeMars

Guthrie Center students Carroll Jackson Gary Tague and Bill Liord from Westmar college studied area industries in LeMars for a month. Each prepared a report on process problems and management employee relations for a local firm in industrial arts program.

Unemployment Payments In Guthrie County Rise

More than three million dollars in unemployment insurance payments contributed to Iowa's economy in December. Guthrie County contributed 14 290 dollars for 150 weeks of unemployment as part of the program financed by employer contributions to aid those involuntarily out of work.

Nine county bridges damaged by record flood and ice

Heavy rain and unseasonably warm temperatures melted January snow across the county, flooding hundreds of acres of farmland and leaving nine bridges damaged or wiped out. County Engineer Bill Stone estimated repairs will start soon with county crews handling much of the work and funding yet undetermined.

Guthrie county farmers increasingly adopt minimum tillage says Lee Neal of the Soil Conservation Service. Acreage grows from 1204 to 5437 acres last year with many growers including Bob Seults and Larry Kilcoin Adair Gene Phelps Bayard Deane Davis Leon Lyons Panora Walt Sevrin Delbert Artist Charles Priestley George Winston John Greenlee Don McCarty and others. Iowa corn and soybeans planted without traditional seedbed exceed two million acres, up from 1.5 million in 1968, as new surveys show growing use of special machines to plant on crop residues. Vernie Grasty a 14 year old son of Mr and Mrs Willy Grasty from Stuart is the fourth Guthrie County man to report for the February draft. He arrived for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri on Wednesday.
