Beeson a 25 year old Norwalk California trustee and Lonnie David 22 of Sacramento were arrested at Avon Lake southeast of Des Moines after stealing Mrs Roger Stewart’s car. Police pursued after a taxi stop and a scuffle with Constable Basil Grossnickle. Officer Set Martin Polles was treated for a head wound. both men were returned to Guthrie County jail and charged with larceny of a motor vehicle.

Two Teachers Hired To Fill Local Faculty
Guthrie Center will add two teachers for the upcoming year. Haverhall will teach fourth grade math, while Valene Van Hoff from Central College Pella will teach junior high English and literature. Merritt says one English vacancy remains and a final hire is expected by August 1.

Hall of Fame inductee Merryman praised as top Fort Dodge pitcher
Guthrie Center man Howard Merryman and Chede Largent were inducted into the Dodge Hall of Fame, Merriman credited with an 800 game, 24 year career featuring 680 wins, 64 no hitters and 10 perfect games. He later ran the Merry Bowl and played in 15 state tournaments and one Iowa professional league game. A plaque will honor Merryman at the air park amid plans for a new bridge on Highway 44, with construction set for 1972 and completion around 1973, replacing a single-lane span over the Middle Raccoon River near Panora.

Two Charged Jail Boser on Peace Charge
Ed Boser of Stuart was arrested Thursday at 5:00 pm in Stuart for disturbing the peace and public intoxication. He was sentenced Saturday by JP Floyd Glover to 30 days in Guthne county jail. Leroy Edwards, also of Stuart, was arrested Thursday night for siphoning gasoline from a construction tractor five miles north of Stuart and charged with larceny. He was released on bond. case continued.

A pole barn at Dean Flanery’s farm north of Guthrie Center burned Saturday afternoon. Firefighters arrived fast, spared nearby buildings while hay and the structure burned out of control. Some equipment had been partially dismantled. Cause unknown.
