Weekend county accidents cause five thousand in damages

Three accidents over the weekend caused about 5000 in damage and one injury. Guthrie Center saw a two car crash with Camella Rueteed and Vernon Elmer Daniels suffering property loss. Union township saw Thomas Michael Gregerson lose control and flip thrice, striking a utility pole. No charges issued. A separate Panora crash involved Chris Priest Independence Missouri and Edgar Wayne Hick Perry with about 400 and 600 in damage respectively.

Pork Editions Earn Recognition for Editorial Pork Section

Guthrie Center newspapers gained recognition July 22 for last year s pork edition. The award came from Publishers Idea Exchange which runs a best advertising idea contest. Although not a top prize winner, the pork section entry was chosen as an outstanding near winner for reproduction in a special eight page section in the September issue of Publishers Idea Exchange.

Earl Plagman Burned at Casey Tar Machine Incident

Earl Plagman, a Casey tar plant worker, suffered second and third degree burns to arms and face when tar fumes ignited from a machine he was filling on July 21. He was strapped to the machine, burned badly, and is receiving treatment at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. his daughter says he is recovering well.

Weirick Rites Are Planned for Mrs Jim Weirick

Funeral service for Mrs Jim Weirick will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at Guthrie Center from Bowman chapel church. The 19 year old housewife died Sunday in Des Moines Methodist hospital. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery with Rev Palmer in charge. She is survived by her parents Mr and Mrs Max Madeson, brother Stuart and sister Mary Frances Beaman.

Fall in Air Set Physicals for Footballers

Guthrie Center junior and senior high boys must attend football physicals on Monday August 9 at 7 30 p m in the high school gym. Guthrie Center doctors will conduct exams with coach Larry Brandt noting pre season practice begins August 20. Additional details to be provided during the exam period.

Guthrie Center Lesson Post 12400 held elections Thursday night for all its offices. The newly installed officers are Wayne Clark Commander, Terry Titus Vice Commander, Forest Kunkle second Vice Commander, Church Stokes Infantry Officer, Barbara Middleton Officer, Clyde Hunt Honorary Officer, Ted Wall and W. seat Wine, Set of Aris.

Two 13 Year Olds Fail in Runaway Try

Guthrie County Sheriff Lester Petersen said two 13 year old boys attempted to runaway last Wednesday toward Harlan. They stopped four miles north of Harlan and were intercepted by authorities. The youths were turned over to Petersen and remained in county jail accommodations for two days under informal probation for three months.

Borer Threat To Top Crop Prospect in Iowa County Update

Iowa State University entomologist Dr. Harold Gunderson warns second brood corn borers threaten top corn yields across Iowa. He cites fivefold higher first brood populations and urges field prioritization, monitoring, and chemical control starting next week in Guthrie County. Farmers should inspect plants, count borers, and apply labeled insecticides when thresholds are reached.

County Entries for State Fair Continue Climb

County entries for the Iowa State Fair rise as exhibitors announce livestock teams. Guthrie Center participants include Merle Petersen with nine Landrace swine four Hampshire swine and four Landrace Barrow swine. Buddy K Petersen shows one Landrace swine. Gary and Don Garloch enter four FFA swine each. Other FFA competitors are Rick Robson four swine Randy Harwood ten swine and Randy Chalfant seven swine plus four Chester White swine. Don Sloss enters one Carcass steer. Bailey Charolais Farms shows two Charolais. Mike Finnegan adds two more Landrace swine.

Vindicator To Close Amid County Paper Consolidation

The Casey Vindicator ceased publication August 1 after months of review by editor W E Littler Jr. The Adair News will carry Casey area items. Frances Michael will run the office the first week of August, then work from home in Casey. All subscriptions and accounts become due August and will be paid to The Adair News in Adair.

Planning Grant Plus Flood Dam Near Exira Iowa

Congressman William J Scherle announced 80,900 in planning funds approved for the David's Creek watershed project near Exira to design a 62 foot high earth filled dam. The $2,040,000 project, authorized in 1968, would flood 600 acres and protect 237000 acres along 126 miles of the Nashnabotna basin. The dam would improve flood control and outdoor recreation at the site.
