Bayard Board Approves Two New Faculty Members

The Bayard Board completed its faculty for the coming year by hiring two teachers. Harriet Helen Groher from Sac City will teach junior high and high school English and assist with reading programs for elementary and junior high students. Galen Jennen, born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, will serve as the new art teacher.

Donna Hafner Completes Dietetics Correspondence Course

Donna Hafner, a dietary department employee at Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center, finished a 12 lesson correspondence home study on Purchasing. The Iowa State Department of Health conducts the course to improve hospital and nursing home food quality.

County Names New Economist for Dallas Guthrie Counties

Karen Gilbertson of Blue Earth Minnesota was hired July 15 by the Dallas Guthrie County Extension Council in Guthrie Center to serve as Extension Home Economist for Dallas and Guthrie Counties. She graduates from Iowa State University in May with a major in general economics and will work from the Guthrie County Extension Office starting August 1.

Electric Rates Up at Towa Electric in Iowa

Towa Electric Light and Power Company filed on July 15 with the Iowa Commerce Commission seeking an eight percent rate increase, effective August 15 1971. The change would raise residential bills about 2 cents per day and total electric sales drive the hike, with company officials noting history of cuts and a new nuclear project requiring 80 to 90 million dollars in outside financing.Town Electric Light and Power Company serves all county towns except Stuart and Panora but provides Panora's municipal power.

Cool Jail May Find Takers

Guthrie County law enforcement officials and jail inmates now enjoy air conditioned offices and cells. The unit, installed in the Guthrie County Sheriff’s office at a cost of $125.51, was approved by the County Board of Supervisors. It provides summer relief from humidity in the basement area where dampness previously affected detainees. One inmate remarked on the improvement.

Begin Paving Panora Stuart Road Thursday

Road construction began Thursday on an eight mile Panora to Stuart resurfacing project. The work, under P and M Stone Company of Humboldt, costs about $85,000 and connects with last year’s eight mile resurfacing south of Panora. Drivers are urged to proceed with caution.
