Ralph Neal Guthrie Soil Conservation District Chairman announced contestants for the Register and Tribune Conservation Achievement Contest. Menlo Man Jailed on Two Charges

Earl Dean Pettit was arrested Saturday night after an altercation in Menlo. He faces charges of intoxication and excessive auto noise and remained in county jail overnight awaiting a Monday morning hearing.

Co Drivers Keep Good Record Two Mishaps

The county reported a quiet weekend with two nonfatal traffic incidents and about $1000 in property damage. Michael Lee Downing rolled over on a gravel county road near Guthrie Center. charges await further investigation. Deputy Brown described a collision where William DeHart passed Ethel Caskey and struck her car, causing bumper damage to both vehicles.

Swim Lessons Sign Up In Guthrie Center Area

An Adair Casey Guthrie Center program opens July 16 for registration from 1 to 3 30 PM at the high school for a July 26 start. Lessons run weekdays through August with Saturdays as make up days. a $2 pool fee is due at enrollment. A Red Cross program rep will be present for questions.

A July weekend two car collision at a National Guard convoy roadblock west of junction 4 and 141 left Gailain V Coenen 24 Bayard and Carolyn K Becker 15 Bagley injured and taken to Greene County Hospital Jefferson. Becker and other occupants treated and released. Coenen’s back injury possible. No charges filed.

The Guthrie Center News hires Bill St. Clair as news editor and photographer. A May Iowa State University journalism graduate, he previously worked as head photographer for the yearbook and reporter for the campus newspaper. Fish Stocking Bonanza Boosts Guthrie County Corn Outlook

Guthrie county extension director Dave May called the present corn prospects excellent with a potential bumper crop. He noted corn acreage rising due to Feed Grain changes but not as much as first feared, and said the first corn borer crop shows little current damage. May cited damp cool weather reducing grasshopper damage and reported no new corn blight cases beyond one near the Dallas county line two weeks earlier.

Anglers Eye Coming Years Stocking Plan Announced

Lee Neal of the Guthrie soil conservation office leads a meeting as fifty two farmers collect hatchery fish allotments from Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery in Yankton South Dakota. Fingerlings are distributed based on pond acreages with larger ponds receiving more bass fingerlings and channel catfish allocated on a separate trip with hatchery reps visiting twice yearly. If all proceeds as scheduled Cryo representatives expect to return by mid August to distribute catfish.

Harry Clark Rites Saturday Casey Burial

Funeral services for Harry Clark, 84, were held at 10:30 Saturday at United Methodist Church in Panora with Rev. W A Brant officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery at Casey. Clark, a former Guthrie County resident and retired farmer, died Wednesday evening at the New Homestead residence. Survivors include four sons Herbert of Casey, Dean and Maurice of Panora, Emmer of Yale, plus 11 grandchildren. One sister, Velma Manneer, lives in Casey.
