Manly dominated the first half and led 22-0 at halftime as Rams fumbled three times. Doug Ebling earned back of the week honors while two Manly runners surpassed 100 yards. John Downing led late Rams rally with 12 points.
Charles R Adams Alles of Osage, 82, died Friday September 17 at Osage Memorial Hospital. Services were held September 20 at United Methodist Church in Osage with Rev. Wayne Gjerde officiating. Local attendees included his son and grandsons Rick and Mark Adams and Mike Adams.
Klassi Motors hosts a showing of the 1977 Ford models on Friday October 1 with refreshments. Starkweather Garage presents the 1977 Buick lineup in Greene from September 30 to October 2 with refreshments. Barth Chevrolet shows the 1977 Chevrolet line on October 1 with refreshments. Social Security Rep in Allison Next week a Waterloo office representative will be at the Sheriff’s Building basement October 7 and 21 from 10am to 12 noon per Vernon Meyer. Rams prep for Homecoming Friday with a bonfire Thursday night at 8pm and a tunnel celebration planned at halftime.
Vernon Paul Mull 18 of Greene High School died in a one car crash south of Charles City on September 25. Services were held September 28 at Bethany Alliance Church Charles City with Maurice McClun officiating. Burial followed at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens. He was born November 29 1958 in Mason City to Paul and Verna Mull and was active in Greene High School band and chorus and Bethany Alliance Church. Survivors include his parents a sister Linda Heinold and grandparents Mull and Scandrett. Hauser Funeral Home arranged services. The Butler County Bicentennial Commission plans a meeting October 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Allison.
Two Greene Community School seniors Bruce Markle and Barry Morgan earned Commended status from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their performance on the 1975 PSAT NMSQT. About 35 000 students nationwide receive this recognition, representing under 2 percent of high school seniors. Edward C. Smith of NMSC lauded the achievement and urged continued education for the students.
Fire Prevention Week runs Oct 3 9 with Learn Not to Burn theme. Sill of Aplington announced his candidacy on the Independent ticket after a June primary where he won 630 Republican votes while incumbent Marvin Barth had 798 and 216 went to J. J. Kriens and Herman Kappel. Sill reports endorsements from David Hansel and J. J. Kriens and invites meetings, with contact after 6 p.m. at 319-347-6292. The Greene Commercial Club sponsors an Oktoberfest at Greene Community Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct 5 with free bratwurst and sauerkraut as part of yearly appreciation events. New members since the last list include Weyand Oil Co., Ardean Sanders Inc., Dorothy's Beauty Shop, Graven & Graven, Bottler Farms Inc.
Funeral services were held for Henry F. Miller 72 of Greene September 29 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church with Rev. Donald Yahlgren officiating. Interment followed at Vilma Cemetery. Miller born September 7 1904 died September 27 at home in Greene. Surviving are Ila wife of Greene a daughter Harold Platte of Tripoli a son Darrell of Bristow and three grandchildren. Three sisters Will Miller Bristow Henry Voigts Greene and Leonard Steere Allison and one brother Ed Miller Bristow also survive.
