Ramblers Top Rockford In Homecoming Victory

Ramblers beat Rockford 22 to 8 in a homecoming game. John Downing rushed 179 yards on 22 carries and intercepted two passes while Jim Brinkman added an 18 yard TD run. Downing also returned a kickoff 46 yards and contributed 13 tackles as Greene’s defense held in the second half.

Allison Ambulance Service Letter Highlights Local Effort

The Greene Community Elementary School will sponsor a student book fair from October 7 to October 14 with browsing during library period and displays in the school library. An evening sale on October 13 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. invites all students, parents and visitors to attend, supporting reading interest and home libraries with a range of books for all interests and a limited selection for adults and high school students.

Pep Club Chili Supper Planned Before Friday Game

The Pep Club will host its annual Chili Supper this Friday October 8 from 5 30 p m to 7 30 p m. Menu includes chili crackers relish tray pie coffee and milk. Tickets are sold by varsity football cheerleaders Pep Club members or at the door.

An estimated .3 to .4 inch of rain fell, soaking the dry soil and aiding bean pods that were dropping beans as they dried. Soybean harvest is advanced but the dryness still challenges remaining beans in the field.

The Greene Rambierettes dropped two matches last week losing to New Hampton 15-7 15-11 and to Janesville 15-7 15-11 3-15 15-5. Captain Bev Brinkman Kan Schmidt Kathy Nordmeyer Diana Beck Rhonda Fraschi Nancy Delp and substitute Pat Holtz led periods of strong play amid inconsistency. The J.V. team split to reach 4-3. Next they travel to Mason City after school and then enter the Waterloo Columbus 16 team invitational on Saturday October 9.

James H Graven obituary recalls Greene lawyer leader

James Howard S Graven born December 9, 1895 in Grogan Minnesota died October 1, 1976 in Greene Iowa while watching a Homecoming football game. A University of Minnesota alumnus and WWI veteran he formed Graven and Graven, then Graven and Wilson, later practicing alone until 1964 joining his son Norman. He was Greene’s first cub master and long active in scouting receiving the Silver Beaver and Lamb awards, served on Wartburg College board, Iowa Bar board, and various civic groups. He married Florence Feuerhelm in 1935 and left two sons Norman and Jim K with six grandchildren and numerous relatives.
