Mr and Mrs Gene Nettleton welcomed daughter Katherine Ann born Saturday September 14 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. The baby weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces and was greeted at home by sister Brenda and brothers Mike Brian and Pat. Grandparents are Louis Nettleton Greene and Louis and Mrs Marzen Marble Rock.
Goose hunting begins September 28 and runs to December 6 with daily hours from half an hour before sunrise to sunset and bag limits of five with combos of Canada and white front geese. Iowa duck season runs October 26 to November 24 with daily bag limits and double possession limits, plus a five merganser daily limit. Deer bow season runs September 28 to November 28 with archery shooting hours from half hour before sunrise to half hour after sunset.
The Greene Elementary School will hold an open house on Wednesday October 2 with a 7 30 p m program in the auditorium. The elementary band and vocal groups will perform as Principal Lee Bachman speaks on The Present and Future of the Greene Elementary School. After the program visitors may tour the building and coffee and doughnuts will be served.
A new annual herd production average for milk and butterfat is announced for the registered Holstein herd owned by Duane L. Smith in Greene. The Holstein Association of America reports 16 659 pounds of milk and 621 pounds of butterfat per cow from 22 lactations, with Iowa State University supervising weighing and testing as part of a breed improvement program.
Terri Leah Barnett 14 born Sept 8 1954 in Charles City died Monday after leukemia. Survivors include mother Lois Hurd Clarksville sister Vickie Barnett Clarksville and several step-siblings. grandparents Herbert and ??? Barnett Greene. Father Harold Barnett died July 24 1968. Funeral Thursday Sept 26 at 1 30 p.m. at Community Church Clarksville Rev Fred Brown officiating burial Lynwood Cemetery Schwartz Funeral Home Clarksville in charge.
Levi Ackart, manager for United Telephone Company, announced changes starting with October bills. Customer data stays local, with billing processing moved to the Kansas City Data Center using an IBM computer, while Newton remains linked via high speed circuits. the new one piece bill includes a payment card and return envelope. The October bill will include a folder detailing the new format.
A representative from the Social Security Administration District Office in Waterloo will be in Allison at the Court House on October 2, 16 and 30 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Vern S. Meyer, District Manager, notes the Waterloo district office at 525 W. 5th Street. Telephone 234-1554. The Waterloo office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
Greene Community School observes homecoming with a Friday parade at 2 30 p m featuring marching band floats and queen candidates Pamela Leavens Wendy Martzahn Mary Rottler Val Rutz and Melinda Smith. Greene Ramblers host Riceville at 7 45 p m with queen crowning at halftime and a postgame dance by the Dean Niehaus group from 10 00 to 12 00 p m alumni welcome.
James McLennan, agent for Standard Oil in Greene, earned the American Petroleum Institute Meritorious Safety Award for risking his life to save a drowning youth. In April 1967 he jumped into Coldwater Creek fully clothed to rescue 12 year old Richar Weaver ling.
A fisherman near Fort Thompson South Dakota pulled sixteen paddle fish from Big Ben Dam from Tuesday to Thursday last week. Pictured left to right are Ronald Steere Alphonse Wihlm Bill Wihlm and Vern Steere. The largest fish weighed 85 pounds caught by Alphonse. Three fish weighed 45 pounds each and the others averaged 65 to 70 pounds.
Mr and Mrs Howard Stanley Spratt of Mason City announce the birth of a son named Paul David born Friday September 13. The infant weighed 7 pounds 14 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Donald Jewell and Mr and Mrs Richard T Spratt of Greene with great grandparents Mrs Ruth Jewell and Mr and Mrs Glenn Starkweather of Greene.

A caravan passes Courthouse Allison at 10 00 a m visiting Clarksville Greene Aredale Dumont Kesley Austinville Aplington Parkersburg New Hartford and Shell Rock with major candidates including Dave Stanley H R Gross Vernon Huhl Charles Grassley and others. Tickets for the dinner available from precinct committee members.
Captain Roger L. Nixt a former legal instructor at US Army Medical Field Service School Fort Sam Houston Texas has been vacationing since August 23 at his mother's home in San Antonio He attended a course titled Law in Vietnam at the Judge Advocate General's School UVA Charlottesville Virginia September 5 to 13 He will depart from Travis Air Force Base California on September 25 for South Vietnam where he expects to be engaged in court martial work.
The Butler County Chapter of the American Red Cross sponsored the Learn to Swim program last summer. About 350 students from Alli son Greene and Clarksville attended Greene Community Swimming Pool lessons, while around 250 from Parkersburg New Hartford and Shell Rock joined Parkersburg Community Swimming Pool sessions. Instruction covered all levels from beginners to junior and senior lifeguard. Miss Mary Hoodier chaired the program, funded by the Butler County Red Cross Chapter.

Charles and Kay announced the sale of the Jerome McDermott home on North Second Street to Mr and Mrs Daniel Miller and the Mrs John Heinz home on North Second Street to Mr and Mrs Wilford Griner.
Rev and Mrs George Knutson depart for a Minnesota trip starting Monday. They will visit Granite Falls and spend most time at Big Stone Lake near Ortonville. They will be away two Sundays. In their absence Rev Darrel G Smith of Charles City will fill the Calvary Baptist Church pulpit.
Funeral services were held in Manchester on Monday September 23 for Ernest Rohde who died Friday September 20 after an extended illness. Rohde worked for Greene Produce in the 1920s, later ran a produce business in Manchester, and retired a few years ago. He is survived by his widow Lucille Kirsher of Greene, a son Reverend John M. Rohde of New Hampton, five grandchildren, and one grandson. Mrs. C G Starkweather and Mrs. Royal Hardman, with Mrs. Frank Hall of Marble Rock, attended the services.
Winnebago Area Council Cub and Boy Scouts organize Good Turn Day clothing drive in over 50 towns across nine North Central Iowa counties. Cub Scouts distribute bags on October 5 to every Greene home. on October 12 Boy Scouts collect filled bags for storage at a central station before Goodwill Industries picks up the bags the following week.
Township and county committee elections were held in September with Kenneth E. Hart elected as county chairman for a three year term. Other officers named include Hugh Scallon as vice chairman Herman Stubbe as member Ted DeBerg as first alternate and Donald Hagarty as second alternate. Committeemen were elected across Bennedette Coldwater Dayton West Point townships with several Greene and Clarks ville representatives. ASC announced guidelines on diverted acres grazing hay bans and plow eligibility. Loans on new beans and corn accessible once stored. Soybean loan rate set at 2.47 per bushel. No grain limits if raised on the farm and covered by the 1968 Feed Grain Program. ACP cost sharing funds obtained for damage restoration practices.
Greene hosts Cresco Crestwood Cadets in a homecoming game as the Cadets build a 25 to 13 win on the road with strong interior line play and effective passing while Greene fumbles and struggles to hold the ball. Players cited include Bencke Koster and Lienhard for Cresco and Stuntz Siemens Debner for the Ramblers.
The local Junior Chamber of Commerce chapter invited male faculty to a steak fry in Perrin Park on Wednesday September 18 at 7 00 pm. About 12 guests attended and were served baked beans potato salad and ice cream after frying their own steaks. A short meeting followed to introduce Jaycees and their aims.
Chaplain Major Donald Neely earned the Army Commendation Medal with V device for heroism in Vietnam. He aided wounded near the Dong Ha Combat Base during a March 8, 1968 rocket attack and will return to Fort Lewis Washington on October 1 after a year in Vietnam. He is son-in-law of Greene resident Mrs. L. K. Barnhart. his wife Elaine Barnhart and family live in Manchester.
The Cub Scouts of Greene will hold their fall organization meeting on Tuesday evening October 1 at the Elementary School. The program starts at 7 30 p m. Parents and prospective Cub Scouts ages 8 to 11 are urged to attend. Boys must be 8 by November 1 to join. Membership forms available from Kenneth Knight at Dralle's Department Store.
The Butler County Fair Association held its annual stockholders meeting at the county courthouse on September 21. President Herman Faber and Vice President Harry Wilder were re elected and three new directors were named Joe Arenhols Clarksville Harry Codner Allison and Bill Jacobs Allison. Kenneth Brandt resigned and following J B Weires death two more directors were added making 15 total. A regular board meeting followed to plan the 1969 Fair with dates to be similar to this year. Committees will be appointed later and the board invites county residents to contribute ideas.
Officials of the Iowa Prohibition Party moved to remove the late candidate for state treasurer from the November ballot after his widow said he died over three years ago. Mrs. W. E. McCullough of Ames learned through the party mailing list and the national Prohibition Party newsletter that her husband’s name was on the ticket. He died September 5, 1965, at age 88 per the Iowa Bureau of Vital Statistics records.
An oyster stew and chili feed will be held at the Country Club after the football game on Friday evening. Members may bring guests.
