Richard Fischer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fischer, underwent back surgery at Mary Greely Hospital in Ames and will be confined there for a few days.
National 4-H Week October 6 12 will be observed nationwide by more than three million youth half a million volunteer leaders and many others. Extension leader Kermit Hildahl notes advances in science telecast programs and leadership development with TV based 4-H projects reaching about one million youths this past year. The Iowa State Highway Commission authorized its director to execute an agreement with the Greene Jaycees to operate a Safety Rest Area located 1.5 miles south of Greene on the east side of Highway 14.Established by the Greene Jaycees after a school-board agreement, the site features picnics, out houses, water, lighting, and donated equipment. Local Jaycee leaders include James Menken president Jim Shoemaker secretary and Galen Lindell treasurer.
Mrs. Marvin Nelson and family attended funeral services for her father R. E. Phillips 78 who died September 25 at Rosary Hospital Corning. Survivors include wife son Joseph Phillips of Corning two daughters Mrs Jean Deveroeux Seymore and Mrs Marvin Nan Nelson Greene and fifteen grandchildren.
Tory Menken, two year old son of Mr and Mrs Jim Menken, is in St Josephs Mercy Hospital Mason City for several days with an upper respiratory infection.
Three hundred eighty persons registered for Marge's Flowers open house at the new shop building last weekend. Fourteen towns represented. Coffee and cookies were served daily, with roses and souvenirs for women and children. Northern Natural Gas Company and its Peoples Natural Gas Division paid 13,679 in property taxes in Butler county this year. The second half payment of 6,839 is the final 1967 tax due in 1968 on Northern's pipeline facilities and Peoples distribution facilities in the county. Iowa total property tax bill for the year reached 4,072,115 up 11.2 percent from 3,660,617 in 1967. The company provides wholesale natural gas to 384 Iowa communities in 69 of 99 counties, while Peoples Natural Gas Division serves 108 communities including Greene in Butler county.
A teen dance is planned at the Veterans Club on Saturday evening October 5 from 8 30 to 12 00 midnight Music by the Salem Squares with Mr and Mrs Melvo Majewski serving as chaperones.

The Winnebago Area Council Boy Scouts of America will launch the Scout Good Turn Day Clothing Drive at Goodwill Industries this Saturday October 5. Greene Scouts will hand out Goodwill Bags and collect filled bags on October 12, asking households to skip papers and magazines.
Greene Fire Department responded Thursday to a corn crib roof fire at the Joe Doden farm east of Wilmar Station. Fire authorities believe sparks from a corn cob fire started the blaze.
Eldon Peterson, manager of Farmers Inc Co op Society of Greene, attended the FGDA Manager's Roundtable in Charles City on September 24. Talks covered grain storage space shortages due to large carryover, with FGDA's Bill Hemmingson outlining Commodity Credit actions. Greene cooperative is among 310 FGDA member elevators. top 200 shippers invited. several new managers attended.
Ross, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Ross and Greene Community School graduate, completed a nine month auto mechanics course at Universal Trades School of Omaha Nebraska. He has accepted employment with Ross Plumbing and Heating in Greene.
The Butler County Extension Service observes its fiftieth anniversary on October 5, highlighting decades of 4-H work and extension programs. 4-H has grown from small clubs to about fifty projects, including leadership and self determined paths, with 571 members in Butler County and 80 leaders guiding 31 clubs across genders and locales.
Kenneth Wunsch 13 son of Mr and Mrs Walter Wunsch fractured his left leg near the ankle during a junior high game at Nora Springs on Tuesday afternoon. He was transported by ambulance to St Joseph Mercy Hospital Mason City where the fracture was set.
Charles Gates Hoil of Marble Rock died September 30 at age 78. Born December 7, 1889 in Greene, son of Bert and Hattie Gates Hoil. Last residences include Charles City home. formerly a yardman at Oliver plant. Survived by wife May, two sons Richard Dell Rapids SD and Charles A. Manly, two grandchildren and a great grandchild. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm in Marble Rock Methodist Church. Rev. Byron Ayers officiating. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery Greene. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.

Dr. B V Andersen is home from Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City after surgery and will convalesce for about a week or ten days.

The Greene freshmen and sophomores battled Riceville to a 13-13 tie Monday night. Riceville jumped to an early lead, but Greene rallied with Dick Stuntz returning a punt for 40 yards and a Ramblers touchdown. Dan Eimers tied the game with a 20 yard reception with 1:46 left. Stuntz and Bryon Trees led rushing, while Mark Dix, Trees, and Joe Shultz starred on defense.
Mr and Mrs Jerry Curtis welcomed a daughter named Rose Marie born on Thursday September 26. The infant weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces at birth.

Greene Ramblers opened their 1968 Corn Bowl Conference season with a 25 to 7 win over Riceville on a cool homecoming night. Key plays featured Stuntz Debner and Siemens driving the offense, while Riceville countered with a late first half score and solid defense before Greene pulled away.

Cadet Steven D. Barnett, son of Mrs. Iva J. Barnett of Greene, is among over 700 seniors at the U S Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He earned Dean's List honors, will wear a silver star insignia, serve as group operations and training officer as a cadet major, and was chosen for leadership and effectiveness. He studied defense projects this summer at Flynn Air Force Base Florida and will be commissioned as a second lieutenant with a B S degree upon graduation. Barnett is a 1965 Greene Community High School graduate and National Honor Society member.
