The Corn Bowl Conference Golf meet was held Saturday at Nashua golf course. Elementary and secondary male faculty members participated. Knutson, Nashua elementary principal, won the championship flight. Hutchinson of Rockford took second. Foster of Greene placed third. Jerry Eimers won first in the third flight, Bill Garner second. Shoemaker second in the fourth flight. Russell Alexander won closest to the hole. Bernard Foster had the longest putt. Participants from Greene included Lee Bachman, Harlan Helm, Arlee Brunsvold, Tom Puetz, and George Roberts.
Iowa City Butler County welfare director John Stout joined nine other welfare administrators at a University of Iowa administration workshop September 9 to 13. The program featured group meetings and library research with Professor Frank Z. Glick of the School of Social Work, and tours of University Hospital with Joe Montgomery, director of social services.
The National Dairy Cattle Congress at Waterloo runs September 21 to 29 with free daily films. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Adeline Hayes Hall Auditorium becomes a moving picture theatre on the hour and half hour, offering entertaining educational films for visitors.
Clarence Edwin Barnett aged 78 died September 12 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City after a lengthy illness. Born March 7 1890 in Vancouver Washington son of George and Olivia Barnett. Survived by wife Eva Roberts Burrows daughter June Stubbe two granddaughters two great grandsons three half sisters and a half brother. Funeral at First Presbyterian Church with two pastors. burial in Dumont Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.

The 10 15 a m Sunday worship service will include infant baptisms for Rodney Glenn Freeseman and Charles Jonathan Welsh. Freeseman is the son of Glenn Dale Freeseman and grandson of William Freeseman, Carlton Boller, and others from Greene. Welsh is the son of Rev. Donald K. Welsh Sr. and grandson of Charles Heirich of Muskogee and Donald G. Welsh of Hyattsville Maryland. relatives will attend.
The Goodwill Industries Truck from Sioux City will stop at the Methodist Church in Greene on Monday, September 30 for the pickup of used clothing. All items should be left at the church before the pickup date.
A southbound Rock Island freight train suffered heavy damage Friday morning when a fire destroyed six cars and damaged two more. The blaze began on a flatbed carrying creosoted poles, whose broken straps allowed burning poles to roll into an adjacent field. The Greene Fire Department responded at 11 10, with Marble Rock assisting. the train halted about a half mile north of the Highway 14 viaduct. Three pole cars, two lumber cars, and an idler car were destroyed. two other cars had light damage.
The State Services for Crippled Children will run a clinic in Oelwein on Thursday October 3 at First Presbyterian Church East Charles and First Avenue. Eligible patients are under 21 with chronic or crippling conditions from Allamakee Black Hawk Bremer Buchanan Butler Clayton Delaware Fayette Linn and Winneshiek counties. No exam fee. Referrals must reach SSCC before the date. Dr John C MacQueen directs the SSCC at Iowa.
Albert B. Mahnke, longtime Greene resident and former publisher, was given a fifty year certificate and pin by May Day Chapter No. 287 of the Order of the Eastern Star on September 9. The award, issued by the Grand Chapter of Iowa, honors his service as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron in 1922 and again as Patron in 1948. Family members attended along with May Day officers and local friends, with Wayne Fischer documenting the moment.
The Farmers Inc. Coop Society of Greene hosts an open house on Saturday September 21 at their new storage elevator and office building. The 150000 bushel elevator offers the latest grain handling with a capacity of 3500 bushels per hour. Guided tours of the storage unit and office will be provided. Open house runs 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Coffee and donuts available. Attendees may register for door prizes.
Greene freshman squad beat Nashua reserves 14 to 7 on September 16. Greene piled up 340 total yards to Nashua 205. QB Terry Shultz scored on a 50 yard run and added 44 and 38 yard runs with PATs. Dan EKimers stood out at end with 15 yard gains and Dick Stuntz caught a 17 yard TD pass. Ramblers defense held Nashua at their four yard line.
Iowa totals show 5,451,599 dollars in public assistance payments for August with Butler County totaling 34,181 dollars. Old Age Assistance accounts for 17,895 dollars, Aid to Dependent Children 9,372 dollars, Aid to Blind 1,391 dollars, and Aid to Disabled 5,523 dollars, with a county rise driven by higher disabled caseload and overall cost per case patterns.
Champion Yorkshire Carl Niehaus and his Greene county team presented a top hog at the 1968 National Barrow Show in Austin Minnesota from September Sth to Uth. The hog weighed between 210 and 225 pounds.
A mixed shotgun golf tournament was held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Sunday. The winning team was Jean Ganske, Ethel Backer, Bill Nordmeyer and Lee Bachman with 32 for nine holes. Runners up included Dawn Cheney, Harry Downs, Charles Nauman and Walter Wunsch on 33. Other teams scored 34 or 35, with ties at pars among Evelyn Behnke, Ralph Behnke, Carl Frascht and Paul Cheney.

Representatives from 12 northeast Iowa county chapters of the American Cancer Society will attend a one day orientation conference in New Hampton on Tuesday September 24. The meeting at Trinity Lutheran Church starts registration at 9 30 a.m. with aims to orient review research education and service programs and to plan 1968 1969 activities for the county organization. Counties included are Allamakee Bremer Buchanan Butler Cerro Gordo Fayette Floyd Chickasaw Franklin Howard Mitchell and Winneshiek.
Roy and Mrs Roy Pooley of Greene celebrate 57th wedding anniversary with a congratulatory letter and a Heinz 57 Varieties gift package from H J Heinz Company. Heinz executive notes honoring the couple as part of the brand’s long trademark history dating to 1896.

Ramblers fall 27 to 19 to Osage in the season opener. The team hosts Cresco Friday night while local farm auctioneer Leo Wilson advertises a complete closing out sale at his Greene area farm on Saturday September 28.
The Greene Ramblers trailed 20-0 at halftime but rallied to outscore Osage 19-7 in the second half, yet fell 27-19. Osage opened with a kickoff return score, interceptions and a late TD before Greene’s big kickoff return for a 77 yard touchdown. Key contributors included Hartwig Waters Gast Ediness Haven Kathan for Osage and Katcher Majewski for Greene, with Stuntz and Siemens involved on returns and passes.
Ross Smith five year old son of Mr and Mrs Bob Smith will enter University Hospital in Town City on Sunday September 22 for a heart catheterization on Monday He is expected to be discharged on Tuesday
Richard Wihim is on furlough at his parents home Mr and Mrs Alphonse Wihim correcting last week's report that named David. He completed training at Fort Ord Monterey California and will report September 26 in New Jersey before serving in the infantry in Germany.
The regular meeting of But ter County Barracks No. 1405 and their Auxiliary will be held at the AmVets Hall in Allison on Monday evening September 23 at 7 30. The Parkersburg ladies will serve lunch after the meeting. All members are urged to attend.
Boone Valley Cooperative Processing Association plans a cornerstone ceremony for its new 2 million dollar soy bean processing plant at Eagle Grove Iowa on October 8 1968. Keith M Voigt says the event will feature a barbeque lunch for more than 2500 farmer owners and will include time capsule burial to be opened in 2000. Leaders from state and national agriculture cooperatives will attend during national cooperative month as the 1968 anniversary marks 25 years of service. The plant aims to be ready for the 1969 soybean crop and Boone Valley serves 55000 farmers through 110 Iowa cooperatives.
Milburn Stone known as Doc on Gunsmoke cannot attend the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo Iowa due to a mild heart attack. Ken Curtis carries on with support from The Frontiersmen Silvers Johnson and his Black Dot Taxi Billy Raye. other acts include New Christy Minstrels Frank Fontaine Grand Ole Opry Ray Price Hank Thompson Barnes RCA Rodeo. The fair runs September 21 to 29 with all Hippodrome shows and races free to the public.
