The editor notes Greene has many new stores and a busi nesslike town look yet complains the main street is cluttered with waste paper and debris. He urges curb and gutter cleaning at least twice weekly, ideally at night when parking blocks the work. He also critiques Khrushchev style peace and laments traffic fatalities in Iowa, urging precautions.
Scotty Thompson of Charles City district field executive for Mitchell Butler and Floyd counties will conduct the Cub Scout pack meeting at Greene Community School cafe at 7 30 p m Wednesday September 30. All parents urged to attend. Eligible boys eight through ten years old should attend. Refreshments will be served.
G E Stephenson announces the Greene and White Annual Staff for 1959 60. Betts Jungling is editor with Ron Crooks assisting and Linda Busse business manager. Committees include art chaired by Rita Kepple and photography chaired by Linda Jackson. Sports committees list Larry Gabe and Sally Bartels as chairs with multiple members.
New titles include The Golden Coast a travel panorama from the West to Brownsville The Harmless People about a desert dwelling tribe in the Kalahari The Years With Ross a Thurber biography and Day before Yesterday a Roosevelt family chapter The Public Library adds these volumes for patrons seeking travel history and prominent editors’ lives.
The Music Mothers group at Greene Community School will hold a bake sale on Saturday September 26 to raise money for band uniforms.
The Greene High School marching band of 64 members traveled to Iowa State Teachers College for Band Day on a Saturday. They viewed Northwestern University band films toured the college and joined 19 other bands in pregame and halftime activities against Mankato State. Dr Myron Russell was honored as massed bands played IRA March and On The Mall.
Donald Bachman defeated Robert Curtiss to win the Men's City Golf Tournament on Sunday, claiming the championship in a decisive final match.
The American Legion is sponsoring a membership drive through October first with higher dues after that date. Interested individuals should contact committee members listed in the ad on another page.
The annual Butler County Boys' 4 H Rally Night comes Saturday September 26 at 8 00 p m in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison Kay Connelly county extension director says officers to be elected Present officers Don Van Dyke president Ronnie Niehaus vice president Alvin Sluiter secretary treasurer and Brent Prange historian will lead the meeting Candidates include Darrell Brandt Albion Ronnie Kiewier Beaver Wendell Ebling Bennedette Jerry Backer Dayton Richard Walther Fremont James Miller Jefferson Keith Freese Madison Billy Hansen Monroe and Roger Epley Shell Rock Merrill Oster former 4 H member and ISU student will show slides and discuss his trip to the National 4 H Club Conference in Washington DC The girls 4 H officers will present a short skit The evening closes with installation of new officers and refreshments by county officers All 4 H members parents friends and prospective members are urged to attend
Paul Hamilton owner of Hamilton's Funeral Chapel announced arrangements completed for an air ambulance service from any point in the United States. Hamilton's, through a lease arrangement, have an airplane available that Hamilton will fly to any point in the United States. More details will be published in an ad in next week's issue of The Greene Recorder.
William Rinnels age 55 of Mason City was arrested by Sheriff Pete E Boomgarden for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. The incident occurred August 15 north of Allison on Highway 1. Rinnels appeared in court September 16 with bond set at 300 dollars for the next term. he posted bond and was released from jail.
The Cub Scouts of Winnebago area council will start the annual Scout Good Turn Day Clothing Drive for the handicapped at Goodwill Industries on Saturday September 26. Cub Scouts of Greene will distribute Goodwill Scout Bags to homes Saturday morning under Cubmaster Clair Weiss with Den Mothers assisting.
Four Greene men Leon Steere Floyd Folkers Bernard Hildebrand and Linus Schrage were arrested by Deputy Marvin Barth on September 16 for unlawful assembly after blocking a car on South Second Street. Schrage pled guilty in Frank Knight's court September 18, fined 10 dollars plus 10 costs. Folkers Steere and Hildebrand pled guilty September 19, changed venue to Klassi's court, fined 10 dollars and 13 costs each.
A B Mahnke arrives home after a ten day stay in Neillsville Wisconsin with Mr and Mrs Carl Kessler a Kessler cousin of the late Mrs Mahnke. On Monday he attended the funeral of his cousin Mrs Dora Mahnke aged 87 in Waterloo.
The Greene Community Parent-Teacher Association held its first meeting on September 16 in the school gymnasium. Rev. Fred Butler led the program, Mrs. James Drakle directed a community sing, and Supt. V. J. Tatum introduced the faculty with one new member, Mrs. James Dias.
Otto Schmidtke aged 69 died Friday night at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after a lingering illness. Born April 26 1890 near Charles City he married Eunice Dailey April 4 1923. They farmed then moved to Greene 18 years ago. Survived by wife three brothers Henry Ed Marble Rock and Charles Greene and sister Mrs Mary Butzlaff Greene. Preceded by parents two sisters a son Richard and daughter Patricia. Funeral 9:30 am Monday at St Marys Catholic Church Monsignor J J Smith officiating. Burial in St Marys Cemetery Hamiltons Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Butler County Historical Society purchases a rural schoolhouse with county funds to place at a permanent site on the northwest corner of the Allison courthouse grounds. It will display antiques and relics of local interest. Donors may contact Hugh L. Mosher in Allison or Dale Van Eman in Parkersburg to contribute items.
Paul Hamilton Jr. sustained a painful injury to his right hand when a football shoe cleat penetrated the hand during a Thursday scrimmage. The wound required several stitches to close.
Barbara Morey daughter of Mr and Mrs Leonard Morey ranked third in the 1959 graduating class of the Methodist Kahler School of Nursing at Rochester Minnesota among 75 graduates. She won first alternate for the John H Kubler scholarships worth 500 each for advanced study in nursing and plans to pursue psychiatric training at the University of Minnesota.
Greene Rams shut out Cresco 19 to 0 at Riceville, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on fumbles. Grendler led Greene with two touchdowns and strong defense backed by Wunsch, Backer, and Nixt. Cresco offense managed only two late first downs as penalties and defensive pressure stifled scoring opportunities.
Butler County Education Association hosts Iowa State Education Association official W. Robinson at a Dumont meeting Wednesday September 30. Dinner at 6:30 in the school house precedes his talk Better Days Are Coming for Education on higher professional standards and ISEA’s Student Teaching and employment practices work. R C Andrea of Shell Rock leads Dumont arrangements as Butler County president.
Rev and Mrs John Deines of Correctionville announce the birth of a daughter on September 12 at Lutheran Hospital Sioux City. Dawn Rennee weighs eight pounds. Grandparents are Rev J Deines and Dr Mrs William Andrews. Mr and Mrs Grasdon Anderson report a son born Thursday September 17 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing pounds 9 ounces and named James Craig.
A truck broadside hit a 1952 sedan at seven mile corner on Highway 14 west of Charles City. William Wiebke 66 Allison drove west, tried to avoid the northbound truck driven by Dean W Keifer 22 Greene. Wiebke escaped serious injury. Keifer unhurt. Repairs estimated at 125 dollars on Keifer's 1958 truck. Witnesses included Vernon Vanderlan Charles City Alfred Grahlman Marble Rock and Arthur Lines Marble Rock.
Jake Mosher of Marble Rock died suddenly about 5 30 Tuesday afternoon at his brother Pete Mosher’s home. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm at Hamilton's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock.
Delila Amick announces Lawrence A. Sogard as Public Welfare Worker in Butler County Social Welfare Office. He began September 16, 1959, with a Forest City home address. Sogard studied at Waldorf College, earned a BA from Luther College, studied at Minnesota, and served at Martin Luther Children's Home in Stoughton, Wisconsin.

Monday Night Big Six League lists Hamilton's Furniture Shhield Bantam and Wunsch Plumbing with Roy's Repair near the top.
Mr and Mrs Duane Martin of St Louis Missouri announce the birth of a daughter Valerie Ann on September 12. The baby weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces. Mrs Martin is formerly Bonnie Clark daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilson Clark.
Mr and Mrs E J Isdell of North Platte Nebraska visited in Arpee from Thursday to Monday morning staying with brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Arthur Pagles.
