Greene residents attend a football game as Jack Sandy debuts as head coach guiding the Ramblers to a 6 to 9 victory. Both teams showed over anxious play but Greene’s squad corrected errors and secured the win against a strong West Union eleven.
Butler County residents invested $87,274 in U S savings bonds in August, lifting eight month total to $869,869 for 76 percent of the 1961 quota. Iowa average for the period 69 percent, national 67 percent. Iowa August sales $10,169,267, eight month total $102,625,124.
The Butler County ASCS County Convention will be held Saturday September 23 1961 at 10 00 am at the Butler County ASCS Office.
The Greene Community Schools Parent Teachers Association met Wednesday evening with about one hundred parents and teachers in attendance. Rev George Knutson gave a welcome and prayer, Mrs James Drake led America, and Mr Tatum spoke for the teachers. Minutes approved, committees listed, next meeting set for October 4 in the new Elementary School. Sperry shared Hawaii trip photos and notes before a mixer and refreshments closed the gathering.

Mayor Vivian Kingery and state officials proclaimed October 1 to 7 as Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. The notice urged Greene residents to recognize the value of full employment for those with physical handicaps and noted many can perform useful labor and even excel when tasks suit their abilities.
The Quarterback Club will meet next Monday September 25 at 7 30 pm in the high school cafeteria. The club will convene on successive Monday nights throughout the football season.

Gerhard T. Ersland, 50, was arrested near Parkersburg by the Highway Patrol on Friday September 15 on a charge of driving with a suspended license. He was arraigned in Justice of Peace court in Allison, bond set at $300 for the next term. Bond not furnished, Ersland held in county jail in Allison Iowa.
Mike Jewell suffered a broken and lacerated left thumb when it was pinched in an accident at his parents Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Jewell home Friday morning.

Donald W. McIntire 31 of Waterloo pleaded guilty in District Court to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Judge Wild set a $300.00 fine plus $13.50 costs, paid. McIntire was arrested September 7 near Austinville by the Highway Patrol after a one car crash. DeWitt Mulder 37 of Court Saturday September 16 pleaded guilty while intoxicated. Judge Wild set a $300.00 fine plus $13.50 costs, paid. Mulder was arrested by the marshal in Parkersburg the night of September 9.
Mr and Mrs Ernest J Koester of Shell Rock formerly Greene learned by telephone Friday from their son Sterling F Koester in Austin Texas of the birth of a nine pound ten ounce son named John C The baby has two sisters Jan Ann and Ellen Louise and a brother Andrew Blain Sterling is a Certified Public Accountant and business executive in Austin Texas.

More than 406 members of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary are expected at the Fall Conference of the Third District in Clutter on Tuesday September 26. District comprises Benton Blackhawk Bremer Butler Franklin Grundy Hardin Marshall Tama and Wright. Norbert Caloud and Mrs Norbert Caloud will chair the Legion and Auxiliary sessions respectively. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. for the Auxiliary and 8:45 a.m. for the Legion, with luncheon at noon. Delbert Campbell of Gilman is district commander and Mrs Harold Lovstad of Garwin is district president guiding the meetings. A Legion service school opens at 10:00 a.m.
Beverly Moser sustained minor concussion a broken collar bone and bruises after her 1955 Ford veered off a Green area road Friday. She was thrown from the car and taken by ambulance to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City for treatment.
The third young farmer meeting focuses on controlling insects in stored grain. The session is set for Monday September 25 at 8 00 pm. Twenty two out of school young men are enrolled this year.

Contracts are expected to be let this month for extensive repairs on the Shell Rock River Bridge in Greene. The bridge will be closed for a short time during repairs and traffic will be detoured west of Greene.

The Board of education elected Mr Galen liter Mr Edward Miller and Mr Bruce Menken to three year terms on the advisory council for the vocational agriculture department. The council met Tuesday evening to plan the adult farmer program for the 1961 62 year.

Mr and Mrs Henry Kielman welcomed a son named Jeffery Jaun at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. The infant weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces. He has five sisters and five brothers.
Mrs. Galen Martzahn of the Greene Commercial Club got a letter from the Wapsie Whirlwind 4-H Club of Sumner requesting information on local tornado victims. The 4-H project aims to provide clothing and needed articles.
