Judge Henry N. Graven of Greene recently retired as U S District Judge for the northern district of Iowa will be guest of honor at a luncheon after the Red Mass next Sunday. St Joseph Church in Waterloo hosts this year’s Red Mass offered by Archbishop Leg Binz of Dubuque with invites sent to bench and bar in 30 northeast Iowa counties.
Vicki Sueschipper daughter of Harm and Mrs. Schipper and Lisa Beth Pooley daughter of Alan and Mrs. Pooley were baptized during Sunday worship. Grandparents Galen Maxwell and Dwight Pooley attended for Vicki and Roy Pooley Martha Borchard and Mrs. Pooley attended for Lisa.
The Greene Public Library summer reading program ended September 1 with 99 children participating and 1,285 books read by the Book Busters during the break. Ten Ranches tracked progress, Tumbling T Ranch’s Book Busters led with 202 books, Walking Y followed with 173. Fifty readers completed the chart by reaching 10 books or more. top performers include Mark Majewski, Carol Shultz, and Jane Shaffer with 67, 56, and 50 books.
Mrs. Will Nixt 80 died Monday at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after prolonged illness. Born March 10 1881 Dougherty Iowa, she married William C Nixt November 25 1902 and moved to Greene. Survived by husband five children Bernard Mark Everett, daughter Mrs. Claire Curtis, sisters and brother, Rosary Wednesday night, funeral Thursday 9:30 at St Mary's Catholic Church. Burial at rural cemetery with Reid Hamilton Funeral Chapel handling arrangements.
J P Knight's Court Dennis Juhl of Greene fined ten dollars plus ten costs for disturbing the peace. Norma Jean Waterman fined ten dollars plus seven costs for failure to yield. Mary Schroeder and Lulu Smith of Greene fined ten dollars plus four costs for right of way violations. Rose Mary Peace of Shell Rock fined five dollars plus four costs for a stop sign violation. Wm August Garth of St Ansgar fined five dollars plus four costs for a stop sign violation. Gerald Marten of Marble Rock fined five dollars plus four costs for stop sign violation. Gerald Sommers of Waukon and Ronald Staudt of Marble Rock fined five dollars plus four costs.
Mr and Mrs Tom Albrecht arrived home Thursday afternoon after a three week stay with their son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs Robert Albrecht and family at Arvada Colorado.
The Cub Scout All-Family Day planned for Sunday September 17th has been postponed indefinitely because of lack of interest and a small turnout at the August 30th Pack Meeting. Boys were assigned to dens for the coming year, with mail notices to those not attending. Bob Shultz received a gift of appreciation for his work over the past year, and the next Pack Meeting is scheduled for September 27th with further details to follow.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6966 will hold a regular meeting on Monday evening, September 18 at 8:30 at the Veterans Club. All members and former service personnel are invited to attend.
Mr and Mrs Earl Landers announce the birth of a son on September 1 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 6 pounds 6 1 2 ounces and named Brandon Tod. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Carl Landers and Mr and Mrs Dwight Pooley. Also listed are Mr and Mrs Clarence J Jensen parents of a son born August 19 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 8 pounds 2 ounces named Ferlin John.
The 1961 Butler County Soil Conservation Field Day and Plowing Matches take place Saturday September 16 at the Lester Schrage farm one mile north and two miles west of Allison. Events start 1:00 p.m. with demonstrations of conservation practices fertilizer rates and spray applications. The highlight is the plowing contest to select Northern Iowa’s representative for the state match in Marshalltown September 22. Entrants may contact the S C S Office in Allison. A practice plowing site will be available the morning before the event. Sponsored by Butler District Commissioners and the County Extension Service.
The entire high school will take Tests of Educational Development from Monday September 11 to Thursday September 14. The tests measure achievement in social studies science English mathematics and vocabulary. Results will be distributed to pupils and parents.
Mrs Ike Shultz is a patient at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City for treatment. Edna Stauffer was admitted to Charles City on Sunday evening for examination. Daryl Fischer son of Mr and Mrs Robert Fischer was admitted to Park Hospital in Mason City for asthma and complications on Wednesday and returned home Monday.

The October 1961 term of the District Court in Butler County will convene on October 2 1961 with Hon William P Butler of Mason City presiding. Fifty trial jurors have been summoned and will appear October 9 1961 at 10 00 a m. The list by townships includes Albion Beaver Bennedette Butler Coldwater Fremont Jackson Jefferson Madison Monroe Pittsford Ripley Shell Rock Washington West Point with numerous jurors named.
Advance plans in Franklin County Hampton reveal the fourth annual Sirloin Special Beef Caravan to Chicago. The procession departs Saturday September 30 at 5:00 PM from On The Move. Last year 52 cattle raisers shipped over 1.5 million pounds. close to 60 shippers are expected this year as trucks travel via Cedar Rapids with Iowa Highway Patrol escort to Chicago.
Butler county representative Charles E Grassley of New Hartford will speak at a Young Americans for Freedom gathering in Iowa City on September 14. The conservative group on campus hosts Grassley who will discuss What is conservatism. He is a 28 year old farmer in his second Iowa House term and previously chaired the House Committee on consolidation and coordination of state government.
Vern Gard principal announces Greene High School class officers for 1961 62. Senior class officers include Dallas Steere president and Jean Van Dyke vice president with Susan Roose Janice White Judy Hauser and David Osier as student council members plus Ewing Miller Sharon Andrews and Marvin Peters on Ways and Means. Junior and sophomore and freshman officers are named with sponsors listed. The class sponsors were chosen at the September 1 faculty meeting with a five year rotational plan to distribute sponsorship across grades.
A Greene High School survey finds 100 to 150 reference books checked out daily, indicating the new library will be a valuable asset to students and teachers alike.
Donald Wesley McAntire of Waterloo was arrested by the Highway Patrol on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after his vehicle failed a turn on Highway 20 near Austinville. He was arraigned in Justice of Peace Court in Allison and bond set at 500 dollars, later released. DeWitt Mulder of Waterloo was arrested by the Parkersburg marshal on a similar charge Saturday night, arraigned in Allison Sunday, bond set at 500 dollars, and released.
The Young Farmer Class will meet next Monday evening September 18 at 8 in Greene High School. Dr D T Drees of Greene will be guest speaker on animal diseases common to the Greene Community. All young farmers in the community are invited to attend.
A transient man named Charlie Fredrick Stein from Adams Wisconsin, aged 172, was killed at about 4 30 am Sunday walking east of Parkersburg along the Illinois Central Railroad track after being struck by a westbound passenger train. The body was taken to a Parkersburg funeral home until identification.
Greene Community School Board member-elect is Graydon Anderson, unopposed on the ballot with 49 votes to 4 for Elmer Bramer and 1 for Walt Wilke amid 1 spoiled ballot. Tornado damage near one million dollars includes farm buildings and crops, with Red Cross aid totaling 458.08 to four families. The Greene Commercial Club reports relief items distributed at the Center and open Saturday for victims to receive or donate items.
Missionaries from home and abroad will speak at the annual Missionary Conference at Calvary Baptist Church in Greene from Sunday September 17 to Sunday September 24 except Saturday. Evening services at 7 30 p m feature Rev. Robert Collins of Regular Baptist Press Brazil and other speakers from Honduras Brazil the Philippines Peru Martin South Dakota and Des Moines. Participating churches include Horton Marble Rock New Hampton New Hartford Shell Rock and Waverly. Public is invited to attend.
George Kohlhass of Chicago died September 5 after a monthlong illness. Born February 1888 near Greene, he farmed with his father, served in World War I, married Cecelia Ryan in 1919, and retired from the Post Office police. Surviving wife Cecelia, son George Jr., daughters Virginia Reilly and Lorraine Olson, several sisters, and two brothers. Funeral services were held in Chicago with burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
The State Conservation Commission announced that an 8 000 cap will apply to shotgun deer licenses and licenses will be issued strictly on a first come first served basis by postmark and hour. The shotgun season runs December 16 17 and 18 1961 while bow and arrow season is October 14 through November 30 1961 with one deer per hunter and licenses limited to Iowa residents.
The Grent-Learners Association of the Greene Community Schools will meet Wednesday September 13 at 7 30 in the high school auditorium. A reception for teachers and refreshments will follow.
