Bicentennial Reading Program honors top Greene public readers

Nineteen children in grades 2 to 6 enrolled in Greene Public Library’s Bicentennial Summer Reading Program with Melissa Ferch named top reader. Other top finishers include Curtis Nixt Sean Larson Ted Kock Jeff Wunsch and Twila Kock. All enrollees may collect cards and Bicentennial bookmarks at the library. Lawn Griffiths the Waterloo Courier farm editor will speak at the 4-H Leader Recognition program on Sept 21 at 7 p.m. at the Fairgrounds.

Cub Scout orientation night at Community Center

Cub Scout orientation will be held Monday September 20 at 7:30 p.m. for boys ages 8 9 and 10 and their parents. Cub Scouting groups include Wolf Bear and Webelos with weekly dens and monthly pack meetings. The pack lists recent activities such as camps hikes service projects and safety programs plus annual events like Blue and Gold Pinewood Derby and a Christmas party.

Ramblerette volleyball opens 1976 season in quadrangular

The Greene Ramblerettes, in their second year, lost to Columbus 15-5, 15-5 but beat New Hartford 15-0, 15-3 with Bev Brinkman providing key setting. They stayed competitive against St Ansgar, 15-10, 15-11, while junior varsity went undefeated. Coach Hartis noted serving issues but overall improvement.

Clyde Stuntz and wife captured the Championship Flight with a 41 36 77 at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. John McRoberts, Sam Sneed, and J Knapp followed in sequence with strong rounds. Flight winners include John Backer Sr and others, while Darrell Davis claimed the flag hole and Rose Ebling had the longest putt.

Rites Held for Mrs Bloker in Janesville Iowa

Bea Menken born 1899 in Rotfreisland Germany came to the U S as an infant. She married Calvin Karr in 1923 and later Forrest J Bloker in 1959 near Janesville. Funeral services were at United Methodist Church Janesville with burial in Rose Hill Greene.

Missionary Sunday Speakers at St Peter s Lutheran

Pastor Lloyd Sand of Joice will speak at St Peter s Lutheran on Sunday Sept 19 at 8:00 and 10:15 am services. He and wife Beryl have spent 30 years as missionaries in Cameroon and the Central African Republic. They will share slides at 9:10 am during Sunday School. Visitors welcome.

They held a Sept 7 book selection meeting and expect the new titles to be ready for circulation around Oct 1. The group invites teen input and recommendations for future materials. FHA approves loan for Greene Housing Development

The Farmers Home Administration has approved a 137000 dollar loan to Greene Housing Development Corporation to build a rural rental housing center in Greene. The non profit plans nine apartment units with modern conveniences for seniors at affordable retirement income prices. Francis L. Brinkman leads the Greene group.

Rams 08 opener looks to bounce back in jug battle

The Rams open the 1976 Cornbowl season at home Friday night against the Nashua Bulldogs in the annual Little Brown Jug game. Greene fell 6-0 to Sheffield in the opener as Greene’s offense managed 48 total yards and the defense limited Sheffield to six first downs. Denny Delp led Rams with 23 tackles, Downing rushed 58 yards on 13 carries, and a fake punt 34-yard run stood out amid a stagnant passing game and multiple sacks. The Rams suit up for another test in the jug clash, aiming to improve offensively Friday.

Potluck Dinner Honors Greene Community School District Staff

New teachers and staff celebrated September 8 with a potluck in the Greene Community School System sponsored by the Greene Education Association. Themed “old fashioned school” the event featured roll call histories and praise for organization, food, and teamwork. Cub Scouts Pack 26 schedules a Pack meeting September 28 at 7:30 PM at the Community Center and will install new scouts. football practice for Cubs runs Saturdays 9 to 10 AM with coaches Duane Pitcher and Jay Majewski.
