The EG Editor reflects on Hootenanny chatter and sci fi Miss America jokes amid a sports note. Greene leads Class 2 football polls as Ramblers aim to hold ranking and draw crowd support at Britt Friday night.
Sixty six youngsters enrolled in the Big Top Reading Club at Greene Public Library read a total of 1 056 books before closing August 31. Eighteen read 20 or more. seven surpassed 40. Jolene Johnson led group one with 78 books, Marc Majewski followed with 50, Pam Leavens topped junior high with 47, and Jeanette Tefft read 42. Others exceeding 40 were Rhonda Majewski 40 Jayne Shaffer 45 and Jan Majewski 44. Story Hour planned for fall with a fuller notice to come.
Butler County records list new registrations including Ford and Chevrolet vehicles. Notable entries include Shell Rock Hatchery owner Shell Rock, Emory Niehaus Allison, Mae Jacobs Austinville, Zoe Chambers Clarksville, and the Hermans Greene with Ford models.
Fines were assessed for several defendants in Greene and Sheffield. Fines included J P Moffett's court case for disturbing the peace totaling 14 dollars with 4 in costs, Alfred Magel for stop sign violation at 55 dollars plus 4 costs, Donald Butzlaff for speeding 15 dollars plus 4 costs, and Dale Krull for disturbing the peace with a car 15 dollars plus 4 costs.
David FP Ipsen a machinist’s mate fireman apprentice on the USS Bennington daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Ipsen of Greene serves aboard the anti-submarine warfare carrier that recently took part in exercises in Alaskan waters. Bennington was flag ship of Commander Carrier Division 19 visiting Juneau and Kodiak marking the first visit by a ship of its type since Alaska’s 1959 statehood. Bennington operates from Long Beach California.
Farmers in Buller county are urged to participate in ASCS elections at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday September 19 to name an ASC community committee in each township. Nominations and election are by secret ballot with a one year term from October 1. Voting locations include City Halls in Bennedette, Butler, Clarksville, Dayton, and West Point townships and other local sites.
The State Services for Crippled Children will hold a clinic in Charles City at St. John Lutheran Church on September 27 to diagnose and evaluate youths under 21 with chronic conditions. Eligible counties include Butler Cerro Gordo Chickasaw Floyd Franklin Grundy Howard Mitchell Worth Wright. No examination fee. Referral required.
The Greene Community Schools opened on Tuesday September 3 with 746 students, up five from 1962 63. Elementary counts include kindergarten 46 first 57 second 48 third 58 fourth 47 fifth 61, while high school grades show sixth 62 seventh 164 eighth 66 ninth 63 tenth 60 eleventh 90 and twelfth 45.
Ivan Schafer and John Van Eschen were elected to three year terms on the Greene Community School Board in a light turnout election. Schafer led Union Pleasant Grove with 142 votes, Van Eschen led Greene Independent with 146 votes, while other area candidates trailed. County School Board results point to Graven and Schuck as likely holders of remaining seats.
Mrs Emil Ruzicka will be guest speaker and display Madonnas at the Woman's Club meeting in St Mary's Church basement next Tuesday September 17 at 2 pm. Public welcome. Members have a picnic dinner in Perrin Park at 12 30 pm. rain venue is church basement. Bring own drink. Social committee includes Mrs Blair Moffett Mrs P C Peck and Miss Edna Stauffer.
Faye Goodsell was transported to the Veteran's Hospital in Iowa City on Sunday where he is receiving treatment.
A Fun Day for men will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Thursday September 19. Lunch runs 11 30 a m to 1 30 p m and supper in the evening. Golf will be played. Jim Drake handles food and Sam Sneed handles arrangements. Reservations must be phoned to Mr Sneed or Oscar Bartels at the clubhouse by Tuesday September 17.
The September term of the District Court of Butler County will convene September 30, 1963 with William P. Butler of Meson City Iowa presiding. Trial jurors drawn by the district clerk Hugh L. Mosher will report Monday October 7 1963 at 4:00 p m. The juror list by township includes Albion Beaver Bennedette Butler Coldwater Dayton Jackson Madison Monroe Pittsford Shell Rock Toledo Washington West Point and others with jurors named per township.
New residents greet Cedar Falls and Charles City families with births at Cedar Valley Hospital. Tracy Elizabeth Steere born September 8 to Jerry and wife with grandparents Frank Folkers Greene and J R Butler Waterloo. Laurie Lynn Folkerts born September 1 weighing 8 pounds 4 ounces to Floyd Folkerts Cedar Falls with Brinkman and Butler families nearby. Jule Mane Brinkman born September 3 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charlie City weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces. parents Clarence Brinkman and wife Julie return home Friday.
Paul Cheney wears a cast on his left arm after a fall from a hairman at his farm caused a fracture just above the wrist. The accident occurred on Labor Day, marking his birthday anniversary.
A short Cub Scout pack meeting will be held at the Elementary School auditorium on Wednesday, September 18 at 7 30 p m. All parents and boys 8 to 11 are urged to attend including those who will be years old in October.
Seven regular Baptist churches join the annual Missionary Conference from September 14 to 22 with eight nightly services at 8:00 p.m. Calvary Baptist Greene hosts the opening rally Saturday 14 at 8 p.m. Miss Mabel Walker speaks at Calvary Sunday. Speakers include Rev. Harry Buerer, Rev. Duane Block, Rev. Martin Strolle, Rev. Gerrit Bunning, Rev. John Patten, and Rev. Robert Cowley from Nigeria. Churches Horton, Marble Hook, Faith New Hampton, First New Hartford, First Shell Rock, and First Waverly also participate.
A Butler District scout meeting will be held at the Youth Center on Thursday September 12 at 7 30 p m. Dr. Thomas of Parkersburg district chairman will preside. All unit leaders and committeemen will attend.

League matchups feature Greene Lanes, Gambles, Chevelle Bowlers, and Dean s Radio and TV among others with several 4 0 and 3 1 records.
Greene High Ramblers aim for a balanced attack and solid defense as they travel to Britt Friday night for a 8:00 p.m. kickoff. The squad, rated No. 1 among Class 2 in the Des Moines Register preseason, seeks to extend a strong start with anticipated starters Tim Bramer and Don Schafer leading a lineup that includes Mark Ott, Roger Weichers, and Jim Curtis.
A stag supper will be held at the Country Club on Tuesday evening September 17. Committee members include Ronald Brekke John K W Steve Brandi James Allen Don Bauman L W Buddenhagen Carl Heyenga and Bill Jacobs.
The Quarterback Club met Monday in the high school cafeteria with 22 members. Officers elected were Bob Mead president and Charles Ray secretary-treasurer. Dues are 1.00 to fund two projects: taking football boys to a big league game and sponsoring a season end banquet for the 1963 squad.
A German brown trout weighing seven pounds six ounces, twenty four inches long, was accepted as the latest fish record by the State Conservation Commission. Kenneth E. Thomson of Davenport caught it in Big Mill Creek, Jackson County. Entries not yet received for white bass, fellow bass, perch, sanger, and brook trout.
Washington Iowa congressman H R Gross invites Third Iowa district youths to apply for service academy appointments for 1964. Applicants must provide full name birth date and parents names, list preferred academies, and mail by October 4 to Room 115 House Office Building Washington DC. One Air Force vacancy, Military and Naval allocations, plus statewide Merchant Marine nomination. Applicants must be US citizens unmarried 17 to 21. Competitive board selects best qualified via entrance exams.
