Curtis Beats Sneed 5 and 4 For City Golf Title

Robert Curtis defeated George Sam Sneed five and four to win the Men's City Golf Championship on the local course Sunday. Defending champ Bill Bartz of Charles City did not enter this year. Donald Bachman took the consolation match from Jim Sexter of Marble Rock two and one. The cup has been won twice by James Dralle, Keith Dralle, Bill Bartz, and Clyde Stuntz. three consecutive wins are required to keep the trophy.

Woman's Club Plans September Meeting at Greene HS

The Woman's Club will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday evening September 17 in the Greene High School Auditorium. The business meeting starts at 7 30 p.m. with a program at 8 p.m. Guest speakers will be six Greene Boy Scouts who attended the National Jamboree at Gettysburg Pennsylvania this summer. Names include Tommy Green Craig Burroughs Bruce Mead Steven Rottler Gary Rottler and Jim Hoben. Colored slides will be shown. The public is invited.

Mrs John Tindall Rites Held Tuesday

Mrs John Tindall aged 83 died after a months illness at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City The daughter of Thomas and <private> Anderson she was born May 5 1874 in Newport PA She moved with her family to Dougherty then Bennezette township and married John Tindall June 10 1896 The couple lived on a Bennezette farm retired to Greene in 1942 Surviving are husband one son Ray Bristow IA one daughter Ruth Stahe Lansing IA one sister Mrs James Agnew Greene seven grandchildren four great grandchildren and other relatives Funeral services were Tuesday at Williams Mortuary at 130 pm and at 200 pm at the Methodist Church Rev Clayton Becker officiating Burial Rose Hill Cemetery Williams Mortuary in charge

P T A Holds First Meeting of the School Year

The first Parent-Teachers Association gathering of the new year was well attended. The program featured a ballet, a violin solo, and a poem recital. A bicycle stand for the school was approved, with a social hour and refreshments to follow in the gym.

Mr and Mrs Larry DeBower of Greene were summoned to Clarion Monday evening by the death of her father Harry Burel 47. Burel was killed instantly when the pickup he was driving collided with another car near Webster City.

Squirrel and Rabbit Season To Open Saturday

Iowa's 1957 hunting season begins with open seasons for squirrels and rabbits. Squirrel hunting runs until November 15 with a daily bag limit of six squirrels and a 12 item possession limit after day one. Rabbit hunting runs until January 31, 1958 with daily bag limit ten and no possession limit.

Powersville Wins Softball Tourney at Rudd

Powersville captured first place in an eight team softball tournament at Rudd after three extra inning games. They beat Greene Motor Company 4 2 in eight innings with Mike Bierkert homering and Del ling Koeff on base. In the 10 inning semifinal Powersville topped host Rudd 6 2 as Rollo Fisher pitched the distance and Charles Pyatt cleared the bases with a 10th inning homer. In the final Marble Rock fell 4 5 to Powersville in eight innings as Pyatt’s single scored the winning run.

Nashua Man Killed In Auto Accident Tuesday

Willy Hangariner a 20 year old resident of rural Nashua was killed at 6 10 a m Tuesday when his 1955 Chevrolet collided head on with a southeast bound semi truck driven by Philip Lunstrum of Mason City at the intersection of Highway 218 and a county road five miles south of Charley City. He was en route to the J F Huyel Elevator at Oakwood seven miles west of the crash scene. Officers said he pulled onto the left side of Highway 218 and witnesses noted his vision was obscured by following another semi trailer.

Community School Passes in Every District Yes

Residents in Greene area approve formation of a community school district at a special election held last Wednesday. Totals show 844 for and 169 against with district by district results across Union Scott Coldwater Pleasant Grove Bennedette Dayton and Greene Independent areas. The new Greene Community School District is to be officially formed July 1 1958 though de facto operation continues after a 1956-57 legal dispute.

Souke Tjaden Rites Held Monday

Jurgen Tjaden died at his Greene home on Thursday September 5 at 7 45 pm aged 91 years 9 months and 29 days He was born in Ostfriesland Germany on December 8 1887 and became a technical engineer He immigrated to the United States in 1910 working in Milwaukee and Sheboygan He married Tena Peters Assing in 1912 and entered the Wellsburg blacksmithing business in 1914 The family had three children Surviving are wife Hanne Otto Jurgen Harm DeBuhr Antje Ennen and Geraldine Halladay plus eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren He moved to Greene in 1948 and visited Germany in 1913 1925 1950 and 1955 Funeral services were held at the Doyen Funeral Home and Reformed Church in Wellsburg with burial beside the church”

Teachers College To Conduct Classes In Charles City Soon

An extension class from Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls will be offered in Charles City this fall. Introduction to Literature begins September 19 1957 at 7 pm in the Charles City Courthouse. Dr F E Smith will teach the 16 sessions of about three hours each, open to in service teachers and others returning to teaching. Fee is 36 dollars and eligible participants may earn credit toward a degree or teaching certificate. Enrollment forms available from Miss Fannie G Howell or by writing Dr Daryl Pendergraft.

Summer Reading Program Ends at Greene Public Library

The Greene Public Library closed its summer reading program on September 1 with thirty four children enrolled. They read a total of 422 books, and only one child did not read at least one book. Winners include Jene Hildebrand 60, Jane Witwer 40, Penny Scott 32 in the intermediate group. Patti Eckmar 20, Judy Holzschuh 13 in the primary division. Stephen Scott 25, Allan Scott 23 in junior high. Sharlene Hildebrand, overall winner, will receive a book of her choice.

Kaiser daughter admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital

In Hospital Nancy Kaiser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Kaiser, was admitted to the Cedar Valley hospital in Charles City for treatment on Saturday morning. Robert Junker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Junker of Aredale, was taken ill in the Greene Community School last Wednesday noon and rushed to the Hampton Lutheran Hospital where he is a patient with a chest infection.
